Why won't bank let me have a debit card?

I can't understand why my bank won't let me have a debit card on my account. I have had an account at the same bank (Nationwide) for 32 years (since I was 3), I have been in my house longer than 3 years, I have a regular income being paid straight into the bank every week, all my bills get paid by DD straight from my bank and have always been honoured, I have never been overdrawn in my life, no cheque has ever bounced in my life and yet they don't trust me with a debit card!! All I've got is a hole in the wall withdrawal card. I have no cheque guarantee card or anything else. Anyone know why?

Yes it is a current account. I have a cheque book, just no guarantee card.
Every year I make an appointment with the manager to ask this and they keep sending me away and telling me to check it again in another year. They can't understand why 'computer says no' either2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040 -
If you are not getting the service you require then move to another bank0

Yeah move banks.
I had the same probelm with Nationwide.
We got a current account with them when we were applying for a mortgage with them.
They gave us a rubbish current account with no debit card but a nice big mortgage.
They said to get a debit card they would have to score us for a new account.
Off to Smile (the internet bank) we went.

Try to apply for another new account with NW. Sometimes this can help with this BS.0

I would move the account to a more reasonable bank, and send a nice letter to your present bank manager explaining exactly why, after 32 years, you are about to up and go elsewhere.
If they don't value such a long standing, reliable customer as you, they do not deserve you.
Ah, and please make sure you tell him that you will tell others about your treatment.
Good luck!Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
Hmm, Nationwide. Perhaps debit cards are for brand new customers only! Sorry that advert really bugs me.
It definately sounds like you need to switch banks.Organisation and planning are for those who can't handle stress and caffine

Banks are falling over themselves to attract new business at the moment so it wont be hard to find one which offers a debit card.0 -
Nationwide are very stringent when it comes to credit scoring although one tip i can give is that if you call into your local branch and explain the situation to the manager, no one else demand the manager he has the authority to overturn the initial decision, it worked for us and we have banked with nationwide for 15 years and they gave us what we wanted after saying we would immediately withdraw all £28K we have with them on a long term savings product.
It works TRY IT :-)
