    Hi
I give my son MorEPA mini junior.
2 capsules are equivalent to 6 eye q capsules,
2 capsules =490mg EPA and 70 mg DHA.
Used to buy eye q but he wasn't very keen on taking 6 capsules a day.
Cost wise works out roughly the same.
They seem to be helping he has been taking these for about 11 wks (fingers crossed!!)

Hi when i first started i originally tried him on the eye q capsules which he had a problem swallowing!! so i bought the flavoured liquid which i thought might be better, but he would not take it (so several £££s down the drain) i gave up for a while, then this summer decided to have another go using up the eye q capsules which after a lot of bribing he managed to take ok.
6 tablets is a lot though to get down,so after some research found these Mor EPA they have a strawberry taste ,i got mine from the the nutri centre online.
My son is 12 and also very stubborn but these do seem to be working:T

They do need to be taken before food though as belching brings back a strawberry fishy taste!!

Does anyone know if the high dosage of vitamin A and vitamin D in this http://www.healthspan.co.uk/shop/product.aspx?Id=CODL could be a problem for an 8 year old to take?

Obviously I'm keen to get the omega 3 into him but not if it's going to cause other problems.

With the Vitamin D3 I can be absolutely certain and totally unequivocal that the amount of vitamin d in codliver oil of any form will not cause any problem whatsoever. The official RDA is absurd, it is based on myth and not science. There is masses of recent research showing we need far more than was thought to be the case. There is masses of evidence showing the current official Toxic Upper Limit is also totally ridiculous. If the current danger level were changed to the recommended daily amount it would be about right. But between 2000iu/d and 40000iu/d for vitamin d3 cholecalciferol is supported by the latest research as the region we should be getting for prevention of cancer, ms, diabetes, hypertension.........etc............etc. The Toxic Upper Limit needs raising to around 10000iu/d with the proviso that this amount shouldn't be taken daily for more than a couple of years, it's fine for building up your reserves over a couple of months though.
So in case you still have any doubts the amount of vitamin d in Cod liver oil is totally safe and if I were taking Cod liver oil I would also take a further 3200iu D3 Cholecalciferol to ensure I got an effective amount.

The amount of Vitamin A in St Clements is 967mcg per teaspoon.
The Toxic upper limits for vitamin a are
    0-3 years: 600 µg or 2000 IU
    4-8 years: 900 µg or 3000 IU
    9-13 years: 1700 µg or 5665 IU
    14-18 years: 2800 µg or 9335 IU
    19+ years: 3000 µg or 10,000 IU
there is more clarification about Vitamin a here

I've phoned the helpline at Healthspan and they have confirmed that the vitamin a in St Clements is the form that occurs naturally in the oil. It hasn't been taken out, standarised with industrially made vitamin a and then replaced. They have confirmed that one teaspoon a day is fine for children.

I haven't spent enough time yet researching vitamin a to be as confident as I am for exceeding the official limits with Vitamin A as I am with Vitamin d, so I'd urge you to simply use a scant teaspoon and not to double up or try to exceed the dose on the label. More about vitamin A: summary

Bear in mind there are no reported deaths from Vitam A and toxicity from natural food sources is unlikely to be a problem.

We also give our daughter eye Q. The one we use is eye Q smooth. Inside the box there are 30 little tube sachets (bit like tiny sucky yogurts!) and you just tear the top of the sachet and she sucks it out. It looks and tastes and smells bit like yogurt/fromage frais and she loves it.

We started her off on 3 per day and the gradually cut down to a maintenance dose of one per day. They are not cheap but I only ever buy them when they are on three for two at boots so that saves an awful lot. They contain Omega 3 & Omega 6 in the correct levels.

Having read up a little bit on the Durham trials, it seems that the children in the trial were given omega 3 and omega 6.

Can anyone tell me if I should also be giving my son omega 6 supplements or is it likely he is getting enough in his diet? He does eat a reasonably good balanced diet (although not a lot of oily fish). What foods contain omega 6?
  • Omega 3-6 food sources
I've no idea why Equazen put omega 6 in with their Omega 3's.
    It seems to me counterproductive.
The point of increasing omega 3's in the diet is to correct the ratio of omega3<>omega 6.
In ancient history we would have consumed an equal amount of both. Because of intensive farming the omega 3 is now lower and because we feed grain to poultry and livestock the omega 6 content much higher.
The ratio now stands in Western diets the ratio is 1/15-1/16.7 A lower ratio of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids is more desirable in reducing the risk of many of the chronic diseases of high prevalence in Western societies.

So don't worry about the omega 6 got far too much of that already probably.

  • I haven't heard anyone mention Columbus Omega 3 Free Range Eggs. These claim to contain 0.7g each of omega 3 and 6 . Does one cancel out the other and does cooking spoil the benefits? Itall seems so complicated. Also does anyone know of any recipes for the sardines that might make them more appealing. I have been trying without much success to get mine to eat more omega 3 or about 10 years-in those days Efalex was the top brand and people from the Dyspraxia Foundation were already recommending it(ds has severe dyspraxia) Any ideas gratefully received.
