Loose Veg in Supermarket

I was just about to say my 4 year old does this - he sneaks the grapes as we are walking round the shop, i put them in the trolley and he will eat a few of them whilst we go.Time to find me again0 -
Then hold those grapes in one hand till you get to the checkout and have paid for them - then he cant get hold of them. Tell him "I'm finding it a bother to have to hold them like this - but until you learn no means no and theft means theft - then you are making mummy do this".
Or take a stapler with you when you go shopping and instantly staple up the top of the grapes bag as soon as you pick them up - unless he gets wise to this and takes a staple remover with him LOL - then he physically cant get at the grapes till you unwrap them after shopping. If he tries literally tearing the bag apart - then tell him "Thats it - no grapes are being bought ever again for you till you behave yourself."0 -
I buy all my fruit and veg at the local market and they are happy for you to try the grapes and cherries before you buy. And they use brown paper bags instead of poly bags. And they pack it all into the shopping bags that I hand over at the start.
Generally cheaper than the local supermarkets, especially towards end of day. Cons are that they sell out of stuff so you have to be there early - not a problem for me because I live five mins walk from town. Also range is often limited but, again, I don't mind that because there's plenty of seasonal stuff.0 -
Slightly off the main topic of this thread - but about loose veggies nonetheless ..................
Yesterday evening in Asda, I put loose veg (carrots, leeks, swede, onions, spring onions) in my shopping trolley - I mean without the usual plastic bags - and for once, when I got to the checkout, the girl weighed them and did not automatically stick them into plastics bags. The veggies went into my re-useable bag as they were - chalks up 1 point for common sense prevailing at long last! (- or maybe she just couldn't be bothered!)0 -
Got to say I would not remove bits of the veg/fruit I was buying- I do think it is ok to shake off a loose bit of say onion, or a loose cauliflower leaf. I also remove toms from the vine sometimes. Thats it though! Often in some stores you pay the same price per item veg not per kg so in that case I would go for a nice big one and make sure I use it all!Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

I agree, if everyone did this then the price would go up, and then we would all be moaning that the price is going up more!ScoobieGirl wrote: »Sorry but as no one else has said it I can't help myself
Tasting food especially expensive stuff like cherries & grapes is so naughty. I really can't see the difference between putting something in you mouth without paying and putting it in your bag without paying.
Also I think if you live in a small area, less shops, might know the assitants, then you are more respectful when you shop- not eating bits along the way and suchlike! This said I have never felt comfortable trying before I buy unless its a taster session or something.
Also who says one grape is reflective of the taste of the whole bunch ?Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Great, I often put them loose and try my best to grab 'em before someone puts them in a plastic bag! The only thing I don't mind them putting in another plastic bag is meat, as sometimes from our local COOP the meat packaging can leak a wee bit and I don't want bloody veg etc!Slightly off the main topic of this thread - but about loose veggies nonetheless ..................

Do you point out that they are vine and not loose tomatoes when you get to the checkout?OrkneyStar wrote: »I also remove toms from the vine sometimes.
Where I live vine tomatoes are way more expensive than the others... if I took them off the vine before the checkout and didn't mention that they are vine, the cashier would think they were regular 'loose' tomatoes and charge the wrong price.↑ Things I wouldn't say to your face

Me too - PLUS fish! Like both of these to be properly wrapped. Don't want runny blood or stinky-fish smell on my shopping. Not too bad if the fish is from the 'fresh counter' in those foil packets - but even then they aren't always properly sealed!0 -
I have actually thought about this in the past as it could be a problem, however I tend to get my toms in Lidl's and the vine ones are the only loose ones (the other ones are generally in a packet sealed). I would say to the assistant if there was any concern however if there was more than one loose type. I don't always remove them but if, say I want 2 to 4 and they are stuck to a massive bit of vine then I will remove the vine. If I want 10 or so I will just pick the whole thing up. I have bought lots of loose veg when passing through Tesco, and have used the self-serve checkouts. I wonder how many people try to pass things off as something cheaper when the assistant is not watching their til ?Do you point out that they are vine and not loose tomatoes when you get to the checkout?

That is not money saving though, that is theft, anyone who does it!
PS Don't the vine ones look a lot different where you get them ? Our vine ones are lovely bright red and the non-vine ones are orangey-red. Presumably they grow on a vine too lol Why are vine toms more expensive ? :cool:Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.
