Loose Veg in Supermarket

Hi folks - sorry if this is the wrong board - just wanted to sound folks out and see what they think.
Whilst in the supermarket the other day I saw some loose leeks and thought I'd make some leek and potato soup for tea and freeze the rest.
Anyway... The leaks were about 18 inches long and the tops were a bit scruffy, as I was buying by weight, should I feel guilty for breaking 6 inches off of the tops of the ones I bought, is it considered a no-no?
Does anyone do similar with any other loose veg?

I snapped all my asparagus when i bought it the other day, just bent it until it found its natural breaking point so i only got the nice bit and not the woody bit at the end....I'm sure people will say i shouldn't do it but it's expensive so i only wanted to pay for what i was eating

I break off the bottom stalk from broccoli before I buy it by weight - always feel a little guilty so must look suspicious and furtive whilst doing this:rotfl:0

This may sound silly but out of habit I always take the stalks off the tomatoes in the supermarket before I buy them.
Why should they go in my bin when I don't want or need them!
Oh and I always take the leaves off of cauliflowers before I buy them. Why pay for the leaves if they are only going to get thrown away anyway?I'm so sorry if you were enjoying this thread and mine is the last post!!
I seem to have a nasty habit of killing threads!

I'm sure someone will come along and say that thes parts you are leaving behind can be turned into a lovely veg stock/soup!! :rotfl: :rotfl: So effectively that way you aren't paying for what you don't use, unless of course you don't like/make veg soup/stock and then it would be a waste. I'm completely with the OP on this one. On a similar note my Nan tastes the grapes before buying a bunch to make sure she is getting a nice tasting bunch!!Banana LoversBuy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning0

I don't go so far with this - if everyone did it I suspect they prices would increase - so everyone would end up paying more. If I pick up a hand of bananas and there is a bruised one I'll either choose another hand or tear that one off. Other than that though I don't push it much past taking the outer layers off the onions!

Have you thought about peeling the oranges and bananas too?!

I take off the loose layers of the onions - it's habit more than anything else
what does annoy me is that I choose not to use those irritating little plastic bags to put my fruit and veg in but when I get to the checkout the staff automatically reach for a bag - I'm trying to do my bit for the environment people, I don't want another bag !0 -
I prefer the stalks to the floret of broccoli! I also eat the leaves of cauliflower - well, the small ones anyway. I just cook them however the cauli is being cooked.
Frugallass - totally agree!0
