what does annoy me is that I choose not to use those irritating little plastic bags to put my fruit and veg in but when I get to the checkout the staff automatically reach for a bag - I'm trying to do my bit for the environment people, I don't want another bag !
Yep - do that too:D And they always look at you like you're from another planet don't they:rotfl:

Oh and I always take the leaves off of cauliflowers before I buy them. Why pay for the leaves if they are only going to get thrown away anyway?

Why throw them away??? They are delicious to eat! :D

The smaller, pale leaves I leave whole and steam them along with the cauli and the larger green leaves, I chop out the tough stalk bit and use the rest of the leaf in a stir-fry

BTW, cauliflowers are usually sold as a unit price rather than by weight so you're not saving anything by taking the leaves off ;)

  • Well looks like I'm not the only one that just wants to pay for the bits they want to use - I wont feel guilty in future lol

    Cheers Folks

I put my loose fruit and veg (like carrots) into one of those paper bags left by the mushrooms!

I'm sure someone will come along and say that thes parts you are leaving behind can be turned into a lovely veg stock/so
You can make a lovely veg stock with the ends of asparagus:D Seriously I snap off the ends of a bunch at home and save them to add to a chicken carcass for stock. You can use the green parts of leeks too.

Ah but you'll end up paying for the weight of the bag too. I hate that. I know it's not much but it's awful. I prefer to shop at the greengrocers nearby, because they weigh the produce, cost it, THEN put it in the bag.
Proud to be dealing with my debts :T

  • i have noticed the price of fruit and veg go up a lot so i am going to take all the advise above onboard until the store staff give me strange looks. I have found that the greengrocers are more expensive than the supermarket so i am afraid to say that i wont go in unless i see things on offer. I have also started to freeze small portions of fruit to make it last longer for crumbles and buy frozen veg (they are frozen quick so dont loose the nutrients) - are there any other tips to making it last.

I think I might just have spotted a teensy snag to removing the bits of food one doesnt want prior to buying:

If everyone does this the shops are likely to start packaging every single bit of food they have on sale to prevent this - hence more packaging being used - and yet more shop assistants that I'm not very popular with (as I take off and hand them back all unnecessary wrapping when I'm buying food - to try to discourage them from packaging things).

Sorry but as no one else has said it I can't help myself

Tasting food especially expensive stuff like cherries & grapes is so naughty. I really can't see the difference between putting something in you mouth without paying and putting it in your bag without paying.
