I compost all that I can, now that I have a garden :D Blue bin for recycling paper and a red kerbside box for cans, glass and plastic bottles. Old clothes go to charity shops, even the ones that are done (charity shops still get money for these) My goes out each week approx half full, though I'm trying to reduce this further. ;) Maybe some day I will be as good as squeaky :D
  • Charity shops are happy to take textiles which are past their best. Even better if the donor points out that the contents of the bag are only fit for rags. These are then bagged up and sold to a rag mechant at a typical rate of 21p per kilo. Believe me this adds up. Some items of clothing are sold on as they are to other countries and some go to make industrial wipes. 100% cotton is the best.

A few people up my street are going to get a shock soon. I spoke to the neighbourhood warden this morning who is on a mission as the council have been told to improve recycling. He was walking around noting who had recycling bins out and who didn't and what people were putting in them.

Anyone who isn't making use of their bin (about 80% of the street) is going to get spoken to next week. It's so nice when I have something to feel smug about :D

I save up my recycling stuff till the bins are full.We have a paper box which has about 1" of paper in it(we dont take newspapers and reuse all paper with a blank side),a glass box which has 4 vinegar bottles in as I keep all jars for jam etc and the green waste gets recycled,so not everyone will put out for every collection but they may not be ignoring the recycling at all.

  • I wish Halton Borough Council would start recycling plastic, I have just tried to find out the next nearest council to us but it's Manchester or Chester and that's just to far to travel (approx 50 miles round trip), I think it is very  frustrating when people want to do their best for the environment and cannot because the facility isn't there. I think I'll be writting to our councils recycling officer as I have just found it on the web wish me luck !

Pro rata that is every bit as big a step down as I made on my own rubbish, if not bigger!

    Well done you :)
