My land fill rubbish challenge

I take the breakfast cereal out of their boxes (leave it in the inner packets, of course) before putting them into my shopping bags -- and leave the empty boxes cluttering up the checkout area. Maybe they'd start to get the message if more people did likewise.
Whenever I can I do the same for anything that's overpackaged. My wife no longer lets me go shopping with her (success!).0 -
"English householders could win thousands by recycling
(06.10.05)
English householders could win thousands of pounds in cash or prizes for regularly recycling their waste, under various schemes being trialled from this month.
The government today launched its bid to trial financial incentives to encourage householders around the country to recycle more of their waste......"

Nice to know I'm not the only one who goes through the kids rubbish to check for recyclable stuff!
Our local council provide 2 different coloured bags for recycling. One for paper, card and textiles and one for plastics and tins etc. They dont collect glass so i take that to our local bottlebank. We have a composter so we dont waste a lot, about 3/4 of a black sack a week for 4 of us but i'm always looking at ways to reduce that.I've started using a calico shopping bag and using brown paper bags for my veg if i need a bag.if not they go straight in the calico bag.
The council have a special offer on this weekend.Composters for 3.00 and large wooden composters for 10.00.(we have a large garden with loads of hedges to these will be great for garden stuff!)Do what you love :happyhear0 -
Liverpool city council is !!!!!! at recycling. I have a doorstep collection for non-glossy paper, cans & bottles.
I always buy our milk from the supermarket because of the cost of the milkman and the fact we go away so often it would be a hassel to cancel the milk. I wish I could recycle the containers but I have enough plant pots etc so they go in the bin.
I haven't got the room to have a compost bin in the yard and most of our food waste is cooked anyway (DD not eating all her meals still) and I don't fancy attracting rats, especially since neighbours either side have overgrown gardens where they could nest
Thanks for the links to recycling websites - I've just discovered I can recycle more than I thought including clothing at the Asda down the road :j Now it's just a case of getting/setting up the recycling boxes for me to sort the stuff out!Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -
we've just started with a wheelie bin scheme here, blue bin takes glass bottles and jars (no lids), plastic bottles (again no lids) and cans. green bin takes cardboard and garden waste, plus non recling wheelie bin and a blue bag for newspapers and magazines. been quite impressed with how much its reduced my rubbish, although was disappointed those of us with the new bins can't recycle veggie waste etc in the green bin, where as the first bins they brought out you could, and those who have them still do, so why can't it be across the board? I used to take all my paper, card, glass etc to the tip anyway, but this way i feel i'm saving the environment too as its one less car journey i make. i still keep old textiles etc, and will probably need to drop them off sooner or later at the tip, but i've reused lots of bots of them so, theres not much there, and rest(i.e. anything still usable) goes to charity shop.0

Thats why I buy bran flakes from Asda as there value brand comes only in bags. And best thing is the nutritional values are virtual identical as Tesco healthly living ones which cost 60p more.
