Spoken like a true businessman, self self self.
Like the staff are getting any consideration.
Its just a chance of pocketing an extra few quid with no concern for the customer at all, as we all know.
The bigger picture is, its not just to line businesses pockets.
As for the OP, it may not be a scam but they know exactly what they are up to.

Self, self, self. @pocketing a few quid with no concern for the customer'. Get a grip. When prices rise because of the imposed fuel duty will that be selfish too? No-one raised my milage rate despite Tax and Fuel rising, I still get the same as I did 5 years ago!! These are hard times for business people and consumers alike - whoever they are.

The retailer can do what they like, if you do not like it then shop elsewhere - that has to be it really. This supposed cut will save me 50p on a weekly shop of £50 and that is if £25 is spent on VATable goods. Oooooooh, that will not even buy a packet of pasta!!

I think we all need to get a grip on how little this 'tax cut' saving means to everyone - and why should it all be about the consumer. There are already codes going around, they will stop once the retailer is FORCED to knock money off. I already know of several sites that will not allow codes to be used on sale items. Plus with the added Fuel Duty prices will have to price to cover transport costs. What about the POS changes? Who pays for them?

And you say I am self self self!! I think you need to look at that statement. No-one is paying me any extra, I do not get additional fuel allowance for using my car despite the Tax and Fuel Duties rising. How do I cover those costs? Rise or keep prices the same.

Did you know that MFI might be forced into administration unless landlords give them a rent free period. Do you think they will be knocking 2.5% off their VAT rate?? Will the landlord let them stay rent free or kick them out knowing they do not have the cash to pay their rent, then the space will stay empty as there is no-one to rent to. Either way someone loses out. And people are moaning about 2.5% discount when they could instead use a code to get them 5% off the current prices. What is that all about??

The whole country has gone mad!! I'll be around to come out the other side of this, if you think I am selfish for not knocking 20p off the price of something then good for you, I suppose I am also 'selfish' for offering £1 off the same £10 item when using a discount code? So would you rather have a 20p saving or £1 saving. Because I'll not do both. As a small business I will not be able to afford to.

Small businesses have to look after themselves while the big players around them are grinding their prices to the bone of any profit, sorry if that is not what you want to hear but that is the truth. Small businesses should be encouraged to survive and I hope for one that I will - call that selfish if you want but I do not intend to add another number to the unemployment level for the sake of 2.12p in a pound on goods that people are not buying because they have no money too.

People want to see the 15% implimented or the retailer is selfish and only in it for themselves. But are you actually intending to buy anything from said retailer or are you just moaning for the sake of monaing about it.

Yes it's a scam even though VAT doesn't drop until Monday and so this comes straight out of DSGi's pocket...

It is not illegal to charge 15% vat at the moment because the business still has to pay the HMRC 17.5% regardless of what they charge customers - meaning those who charge less take the hit themselves as they still have to pay over the full 17.5% till the change takes place on Monday.

It is illegal to show the VAT amount on the receipt as 15%.

If someone is buying for their business and intends on reclaiming the VAT then the amount they can reclaim on their return before Monday is 17.5% - this is the amount they will enter onto their VAT return, not 15% as this does not apply until Monday and th receipt issued will be incoorect. That is why we have to keep receipts to back up our bookkeeping entries.

Hence it being illegal. I'd be extremely annoyed if I was charged 15% as it's completely screw up my Tax return and computing software! If the figures are out HMRC will want to know why, you don't just fill in the boxes and hope for the best, it does all have to be done properly and the figures add up else you'll be on the list for a Tax Inspection.

The store can however offer a discount - as DSG have done.

I cannot see how it is a scam as DSG have offered the OP the discount that equats to the VAT being deducted. Only that the OP wants more money off and is cominaing that he cannot use 2 codes.

Putting the prices up is not a scam. It is ensuring your business gets through these tough times by whatever means possible - especially as people are not buying the 'luxuries' that DSG sells.

I have no reason to go to Dixons, the 2.5% rate drop is not going to have me rushing out to buy a new TV as I do not need it. If I need it I'll shop around as there are far better codes out there than that offered by DSG. You can get more than 5% on Quidco for start and Dixons were no longer on there last time I looked.

Yes blue_monkey I agree it is illegal to show the VAT on the receipt as 15%, but it is not a problem for them to offer the customer a iscount as you say. That is really what I was saying because the business still has to pay the VAT at 17.5% until Monday.

  • yea i read bestbuy is going to open store in enfield, thurrock, and slough.. other places as well... i believe this will be the end of DSG (currys, pc world, dixons) and comet. Best buy are very competitive in the US. When I was living in the US all the electronics I purchased were from Best buy and they were cheap.. the cheapest actually. So if you're looking to purchase an expensive item, wait til the beginning of next year til Best buy come and open up shops.

Best Buy have been trying to come for the UK for quite some time - they were going to buy a shop in Lakeside but DSGi bought it (and then never used it just to stop them) - I wouldn't bank on them being here next year tbh.
