70% off and no sales, what kind of products do you sell?

Well, there have been some sales but this week, nothing really. Gives me a week off I guess!! I sell ladies underwear, I've a site that sells the same stuff as Figleaves Clearance and Brastop. If you click on my name you can choose my homepage and you will see what I mean.

I am registered with both Figleaves and Brastop for updates and there are codes coming out as soon as one runs out and an email to tell me that the code truns out in 3 days... then 2 days and then one day left to go. Everyone is struggling to sell. I've got a code that knocks another 10% off but it has hardly been used either. Lots of views but no-one buying. The difference is that they have had the money to heavily advertise in the past and I will not borrow to run my business so I've not advertised. Because I owe nothing I am not worried but I will not knock the 2.5% off as it will not be worth my time. I'll pootle along merrily while I have to.

There have been big changes in the last month and I think that this will be a huge test of time for us retailers. Ladies are being frugla and buying when they need it from the high street in places like Primark. They are not caring if it is branded and where they would buy to treat themselves they can no longer do this. Hence no sales. Hence no-one else having any sales.

I'd be worried if it was just me, but I know it isn't so I am not really.

... Hardly a scam! ... They probably will not bother reducing their prices for a few quid either ...

Then why make a big thing about it on their website and on TV - their Currys Marketing Director stated that all DSG outlets would be applying a discount at the till from today - what he didn't say was that they would be adusting prices upwards FIRST!!!!!

I thought I would quickly take advantage today knowing that they would be doing the dirty - but they have already beaten me to it!

Forget this VAT stunt - you can't even take advantage of it if you're quick!

I've always had a low regard for all the DSG retailers - this just reinforces it - their business and share price look very shaky - when Best Buy finally arrive in the UK - DSG will be finished!

But they cannot do it from today - the rate today is 17.5%. The new rate does not come in until Monday and everyone knows that. Have they given a discount on the tills? This is what some retailers are doing to make it easier. Whoever is charging 15% is breaking the law!! This is why they have given the discount code, so you can save, It's not a scam if you are saving as they have said you can. However, you cannot use multiple vouchers on the site. So it is either one saving or another. If you do not need it wait and shop around.

Comet is usually cheaper anyway, ask if they have not got it out on display and you can usually do a deal with them.

I am afraid that because of the current markets prices will go up before they are marked down - I am sure it is not just Dixons that will do it. But this is why they have given the discount code for the discount because if they give the 15% rate before Monday they are breaking the law.

if the government is dropping the vat, then surely retailers will have to do the same, otherwise they are totally undermining the governments intentions. if the Gord sees that the vat cut isnt reaching his people, then im sure he'll step in.

the retailers should see a rise in sales anyway without hatching plans to put the prices up. a vat discount should not affect their profits so why should they be clever with their pricing?

unsurprisingly, the voucher code i wanted to use when the vat drop comes in on monday, runs out 3 days before!

btw if ur after a tv, dixons are doing a 5% off code til the 28th. just type fivetv at the checkout
  • I think you need to go check out some of the other posts on the boards, dropping the VAT by 2.5% is not going to make an iota of difference as there is little profit to be dropped - 2p in every £1. That is not going to make people buy stuff that they do not really need. Vat is applicable to luxury items and it is these that people are cutting back on.

Hey, I need a new car, I can save £300 on a 25k car, I can afford it now. I think not!

Gordon Clown can tell me to reduce a pair of knickers by 10p but it is MY choice as to whether I do it or not. There are sales everywhere at the moment, is 20p off a pair of trousers really going to make you buy them now? Because it isn't me. I never had the money before and I do not have it now.

However, it is scary that people think that this 2.5% VAT drop means they are going to be better off and will buy things they cannot afford. Once the new Tax rises kick in come April and the CC needs to be paid then what happens? The Goverment is rising confidence to saddle people with more debt later on. It's shocking to see that people think a 2.5% VAT drop will make them now be able to afford things they could not before.

Prices are still going to be the same as before this really is not going to mamek any difference, I'll still be shopping around. I've seen stuff for sale in months before this that were £20-£30 cheaper in one shop than another. It is just because the Goverment has been bleating on about 'passing costs on' people think they are suddenly richer. They aren't. You aren't. Be careful.
  • Also, this was supposed to help small businesses too. They have paid for their stock and not being VAT registered will have the additional paid 17.5% VAT on their goods which they cannot claim back, they still have to sell for the same price to recoup their cost while the bigger retailer is able to get it at 15%. Maybe it is also the smaller reatiler you should be looking at who is already trying to compete in this dog eat dog world.

There is a whole bigger picture to this and it is not a clear as the Government have made it out to be to the consumer. If you do not have a business to run then you will not understand so all you can keep on doing is shopping as you were before.

Dixons is still more expensive than Comet anyway!!

Dixons have already a number of discount codes ...

    SAVE5 - £5 0ff a £99+ shop
    SAVE10 - £10 off a £299+ shop
    etc

and today they introduced a new code VAT15 to get a further 2.13% off due to the impending VAT cut.

Only problem is you cant combine the two! Put in the second and it erases the first!

Typical Dixons (DSG) scam - why does anyone shop there?

youre better off using vat3 rather than vat15 ... you get more discount.

you could also try using vat3 when the vat comes down automatically on monday as the vat3 code is just a dixons promo.

    Hardly a scam!

The point of the reduction is that is businesses are struggleing the extra 2p in the £1 will pay for staff to keep their jobs rather than losing. There is a far bigger picture here than just getting the 2.13% discount on something off by Monday.

Spoken like a true businessman, self self self.
Like the staff are getting any consideration.
Its just a chance of pocketing an extra few quid with no concern for the customer at all, as we all know.
The bigger picture is, its not just to line businesses pockets.
As for the OP, it may not be a scam but they know exactly what they are up to.
