I'm perfectly happy at the moment, living free of charge in a company house and gf has just finished PGCE and starts new job next month. Just waiting to see what the benefit in kind value will be, but still far cheaper than renting or buying.
We're getting married next summer and will probably be looking to buy around 2010 and should have a nice fat deposit saved up by then.0 -

Renting for me would be better if I got some sun. So orientation + conservatory.
The sun makes me motivated. And I'm not getting enough (sun).
Full of ideas, no drive.
When I buy, the orientation will be perfect and I will have a conservatory.
In the meantime, sat here, in rented, wishing I had a sunny one but feeling unable to move as I am on a periodic tenancy and to move I'd have to pay fees up front again and tie myself down to 6 months... so sitting it out until I have a reason to move.
But I do miss the sun ....
HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEEEEE STR pot though ... and not sharing the bugg4h, so sod off0 -
I've looked at various times at buying, did the sums, and it never added up for me. It's all down to a person's situation isn't it?
I don't see why anyone should be smug one way or another really. I also don't see why anyone should be ashamed of anything one way or another.
Do I really want to overstretch myself to get onto the property ladder? Or do I want a decent quality of life? I could have gone either way, but for me, personally, I chose the quality of life.0 -
Each month you live in rented accom is another whole month away from owning your own home outright, Wheras even if you live in a house that is sliding in value each month you pay your mortgage is another month closer to owning your own home outright.
Thats the way I look at it
I'd suggest you do a GCSE in maths and start looking at it differently, then!
House prices falling 1% a month, renting 25% less expensive than buying interest only.
I can rent this place for £700 a month and put £1000 in my savings, or buy it for £900 a month and pay of £800 of mortgage.
Buy it this month - my share of the cost around £160k. Buy it next month, £158k, etc.
Mortgage if I buy it now: 160k minus deposit x
Mortgage if I buy it next month: 158.5k minus deposit x minus £1000 extra saved
Mortgage in a month if I buy it now: 160k minus deposit x minus £800 paid off.
Amount closer to owning my own home I get by renting rather than buying: £1,700 a month.Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!0 -
Ummm, one doesn't feel quite so "smug" owning ones own house when it needs things like rewiring, boiler/plumbing and new roof etc... Hands up who wants to buy a house now?
I'm bloody sure that renting for life would work out cheaper sometimes  ; always something that needs fixing / money throwing at it. Believe me, owning your own gaff isn't all it's cracked up to be..

I'm renting at the moment but have started looking to buy as prices are falling and even more so in next 6 months apparently. So hoping to be a home owner soon although there isnt much out there at the moment,
I am not married and in a flatshare, so what I am about to say will not be true for everyone.
In London I have a large room in a decent but unfashionable area. Including bills and council tax, this costs me around £350 PCM.
If I owned a flat, I could not share bills, I would be paying more Council Tax, would pay ground rent and service charges. I have roughly worked out that my "real" rate of rent is in fact about £100-150 PCM, and that is before furniture/appliances/decorating costs/repairs.
This gives me enough money to save money for a deposit. Now house prices are falling fast, the real savings are huge.
I would love to have my own gaff, but financially, renting is a no-brainer. My strategy is fairly similar to the Eastern Europeans. Come to the London, put the money away, and then set up home somewhere cheaper (Eastern Europe in their case, the future UK in mine).
Homeowning may be a good lifestyle, but it can be a money pit. My "dead money" of renting is more than offset by the over savings, so in fact renting has made me a quite a lot richer.Politics is not the art of the possible.
