Why are some people on here being so smug?

I'm sure it is, but let me say, that living in my own house is even better, but thanks, it was interesting getting your opinion.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

Yes living in your own (paid for) house is also very good. Stack of cash in the bank and a loving partner to boot. Jobs a good un.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

House owner with mortgage, rather be here than rented. I remember sarking being some sort of flamer a while back, flamers should be banned

rent at less than half the cost of buying this property.

own 2 houses outright, no mortgage, bought both for cash.

rental income on both ? 0

some things are worth more than money

Each month you live in rented accom is another whole month away from owning your own home outright, Wheras even if you live in a house that is sliding in value each month you pay your mortgage is another month closer to owning your own home outright.

Thats the way I look at it

Renting is actually quite grim, though being a homeowner can have its problems too. Especially if most of the home that you "own" belongs to the bank.

renting was the perfect thing for me, it wouldn't be for every one.

I am here for a set period of time, for a set reason. Property appreciation has been dead here since q1 2006 at the very latest. I'd have lost many 1000s if I'd bought instead of rated.

when I buy a house for myself, It will either be bought outright, or paid off within 5 years.

it all depends on the individual circumstances. I have a long term commercial landlord, who basically doesn't care what I do as long as I don't annoy the neighbours and the rent is paid. redecorate ? pets ? anything I want.

there have been people living in the same block for 10 years +

of course if I had a negatively geared BTL landlord who was up to his neck in debt, then I'd be rather more worried.

  • Is there much difference between interest only mortgage and rent. Your just renting off the bank right?

Retail sales are at a record high for May 3.5% - looks like renting off the bank is on its way up :-(

    I've been Money Tipped!
I've never lied, not being a home owner makes me sad. I think people living in their own home within their means are very lucky, I envy you but wish you well and hope too join your ranks one day soon......

living in this limbo is sometimes bloody grim. Might be better if DH and I were in proper rented together but we just want to save every penny...so we can be homeowners....

we are not going to be stupid to do so but its our aim. No smugness here!
