Connection problems

I keep losing my internet connection for some reason.

Should I be checking the phoneline? The ISP? The pc?

I'm only lasting a few minutes on this site so apologies if I don't reply to anyone that might reply.

If it helps, I'm a dinosaur that's still on dial-up with Wanadoo.

TIA :)

If this is in the wrong section, please feel free to move it.

Try rummaging through your connection settings to see if you have any auto-disconnect gubbins enabled. I remember when I had Outlook (yuk) enabled so it would disconnect the line every time it had finished checking for email. It took me weeks to figure out what was wrong!

It could also be someone picking up a handset while you're online. I recall call waiting would kick me off back in the day.

Failing that, call your ISP or just switch to broadband. It's quite jolly, don't you know.

Thanks :) I avoid Outlook if that helps? And no-one's picking up the handset  Call waiting? I only use the mobile :o and only for incoming calls. (I'm not greedy, honest - but I remember those 'bad old days' too ;))

So it might be the ISP?

As for BB, where I live it's not been available long ..... but I'll make sure that's one of the next jobs!

    Thanks for the reply :)

(I'd say the same to oh_heck but she's not very useful ;))

It's unlikely to be your ISP, because when something goes wrong at their end it would affect 10,000s of customers, so in all likelihood it's in your premises or just your line. But then I haven't dabbled in dial-up for yeeeaaaars. Give 'em a call just to see if they can suggest anything. Failing that, see if BT can see anything wrong with your line. I think BT faults can be called by dialling 151 (I might be wrong). 150 is the usual CS number and 152 is for business, so it's 15x I'm sure.

I've just plugged the pc into a different socket steve ..... see how it goes from there :) (It reminds me of when people were able to 'nuke' people off the internet, which is why I wondered if it was a Techie problem  )

Thanks for the rest of the info too. I''ll give them a call later today ;)

I doubt it's specifically nuking because patches for that were released about 5 years ago! Plus your IP address will change every time you re-connect so it'll be very hard for someone to specifically target you. Do try scanning your machine for weirdness though.

This is good for getting rid of spyware:

    http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-1

And run a virus scan too (this one can be done online):

It might not be either of those, but it's always good to eliminate them from the equation completely, plus your computer will thank you for it either way.

Five years? It feels like yesterday ;)

I've got the Ada-ware SE one and Spybot S&D, but I'll take a look at the links supplies.

    Thanks again.

Have you recently extended the phone line more than 5mtrs that can do it.
Or ask the phone line provider to see if theres a fault on the line, and ask them
if they can boost the gain.

@steve! The default for Outlook is to remain connected to the net
after checking e-mail so you must of accidentally changed this.

Not extented anything lately Mr S ...... unfortunately ;)

But now I've read back to steve!'s post and yours, I remember BT knocking on the door about a fault a couple of weeks ago after a big storm.

It confused us because we rang BT and they said *****, (where we live) was out of action. Yet we rang from ***** lol

Just had to update Ad-aware and it's showing 5 objects that have a TAC rating of 10  (I don't know what TAC means)

And 78 objects with a rating of 3  (ditto)

Twenty four others that don't pose a threat .....

Any help much appreciated, even if it's moved to Techie.

    TIA :)
