I think he is saying that if you JUST go Kings Cross to Tower Hill each day, just making that one journey and (possibly) if you don't go anywhere at the weekend, that you would have been cheaper doing Oyster pay as you go.

He didn't try to say that in a constructive way though.

Remember that whenever you travel by national rail in the South East region, you need to show your gold card, and ask for a "Boundary Zone 2" to XYZ ticket. This will be cheaper on two fronts - first of all, you'll only pay for the bit of the journey that doesn't cover into the central London station, and secondly you'll get 1/3 off (after 09:30 weekdays).

Ah thanks! I think I'll get the 16-25 too coz I'll be 26 in a month and I might be travelling aside from south east and London in a year. :D Thanks very much for the tips everyone.

Yes - you can buy the young persons railcard (now 16-25 railcard) the day before your 26th birthday, and it will still be valid for a year.

    Hi all,
hope you don't mind me asking a question.

Me and DD are coming to london for the 2 days over the weekend fri-sun but unsure whether to get an oyster card or just buy a daily off peak travel card each day - which would be cheaper??

It would be cheaper to buy the daily off peak as specified in the tfl website page 26. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/guide-to-fares-and-tickets-08-01-02.pdf

If you get an oyster card it will cap at the daily travelcard rate.

This means that if you only do a few journeys you won't have shelled out for a travelcard but if you do more you have the benefit of the travelcard.

The hassle with the oyster is getting one, you have to pay a deposit of £3. This is refundable but obviously more effort involved.

If you travel to London regularly you may find it worth just keeping it though.
I've got my own flat :j:j

Now I have to pay the bills

    .

    Nope.

It will cap at 50p a day LESS than the daily travelcard rate.

Depends whether you think it's worth the effort of getting the Oyster cashed in afterwards to get your deposit/unused money back to save that 50p.

pxtb - we arrive at 11am on the friday and leave at 5pm on the sunday. will be travelling within zone 1-2. the furthest we will go is greenwich which is on the border of zone 2-3.

I do hear what you are saying about the oyster card and the hassle of getting one and getting a refund for it. Will be making probably about 6-8 journeys on the tube per day and i though that i would spend far less than the capped daily rate of the oyster card - maybe not then.

If you have a railcard (Network railcard/young persons/etc) a travelcard is £4.80 at the weekend - can someone remind me what the Zone 1/2 cap is currently?

Note that Oyster PAYG is not valid on the trains to Greenwich - you would need a paper travelcard.
