Received a letter from Halifax today, hopefully this will give you a bit more underdstanding...

"it is Halifax policy not to allow a person who is bankrupt to operate an account with us, this means that once we have heard from the official receiver and complied with their wishes it will be necessary to close the account"

Be cautious of some banks where the staff tell you you can keep the account as long as its in credit and the OR has no interest in it. This is often overturned by their head office.

Best to open a co-op cashminder, barclays basic just in case.

Just an update re the bank account situation.

I rang Barclays Customer services and spoke to two very nice people. Got put through to the higher management regarding BR details. I gave them my BR number and explained when this happened. He said that because its only a basic bank account the 'Barclays' have no problem what soever with me using the account as per usual. Also he said it would not be frozen due to it being only the basic account and unless they received instruction to the contrary then it would be fine. I said that the OR would be sending them a letter within the next few days (hopefully) telling them that they have no interest in it. He said that they would update my file and send me any letters regarding the account once contact had been made with the OR.

So i can use teh account as normal without any problems regarding Direct debits and wages.

So Barclays are BR friendly after all..they were all very pleasant indeed.

  • Just to say that I set up a separate account following the advise of the CAB for wages and pensions and continuing dds. My existing Lloyds TSB account was in overdraft with an outstanding loan and credit cards to this company.

I got the Coop cash account with the visa electron and told them I was going bankrupt, also a POaccount for my state pension - told them too.

When I spoke briefly to the OR and explained what the Coop & PO was being used for, he said to tell them I was now bankrupt and he would inform them in writing he wasn't interested in these accounts.

I rang the Coop - no problem there they said the account was for people in my situation and the PO account no problem either as no-one can touch state pension anyway.

Since bankruptcy there has been a credit, debit and cash withdrawal from the coop with no problems and my state pension was available on Monday.

I know the Nationwide now don't want BRs on their cash current account but I did set one up prior to bankruptcy with them knowing what the situation was. The account has always been at zero and I will let this forum know further down the line, what happens to this.

I understood from the CAB that when frozen an account cannot receive funds or debits and funds go into a suspense account for the duration of the freezing.

Don't know if any of this is helpful.

We set up co-op cashminder accounts prior to our BR and to be honest if the accounts were frozen we don't know, there was no indication of any change. Two days after our BR I put money withdrawn back into the account and have carried on using as normal.
Hope our experience is of some help.
