can anyone recommend a science book for my 12 year old daughter, she is struggling with home work and a book which explains things she has learnt in school would really help all of us. thank you

WHSmiths sell Revision and Work guides by CGP which cover GSE levels for all the exam boards.

I'm not sure if there is a range of books to cover the year prior to this. It would be worth a look. Take your daughter with you as she will recognise what she is studying.

The bbc do tv programmes on science subjects - if you ask at your library they should have a copy of bbc educational programmes.

I managed to tape some programmes for my daughter and they were invaluable.

  • Might be worth finding out what textbooks they use in her school....isn't strange that the children don't have text books to bring home!!! Ask your daughter to make a note of the title, authors(s) and IBSN number (this can usually be found on the front couple of pages).

I did this with my son but he needed our help for maths and it really made the difference.

Some of the television programmes are really good at explaining not just the facts but the reason why and how we can see this is the case.

The Key stage 3 bitesize programmes should be transmitted soon and are repeated later in the year.

Have you had a look at the bbc bitesize site - they do revision and sample questions with answers.

Why not incorporate a weekly trip to the library into your routine, if you don't already. That way you can look at books together and chose ones that explain the specific topics clearly to you both. Libraries also do videos etc., so maybe some of these might help too.

This way you'll save on money initially, and if you find you use the same book/series all the time, it could be worth buying.

I always found https://www.redhouse.co.uk very good on prices.

Is she into the Horrible Science books? They're really fun and make science memorable, but I think they might be geared more to the 'boy' market.

I haven't looked at them, but I'm getting quite a collection of CD-Roms from Shreddies or Coco Shreddies or Cinnamon Grahams, don't remember which. One of them is 'Be a Science Explorer' and if you would like one but don't like those cereals send me a pm with your address and I will post one to you.

Mind you, I think I would flag up to the school that your DD is having problems with her science homework! If you don't have a parents' evening soon, why not phone and say you would like her science teacher to phone you?

I echo cgp and bite size are brilliant. Any specific questions you could post - I'm sure we have some science teachers as members.
  • thank you all for your ideas, we have checked out various websites that seem to make sense to dd but don't explain things so i can understand them!! maybe i should go back to school!! i feel so stupid when i can't help her with her homework because i don't understand it. she then spends most of the time trying to explain things to me.
