Do i need line rental for broadband?

Ive just moved into a privately rented student house. We want broadband.
My question is do we need to have line rental (bt or equivalent) to be able to have broadband?

Only if its cable broadband can you do away with line rental

In the near or not quite so near future it may be possible to do away with the line rental on a BT line and still have the broadband.0

I heard on one of Martins rants...sorry, discussions, that if you dont make that many calls, and have broadband its possible to make phonecalls through the internet and cut the cost of line rental. I know this of course but how is it possible (Or is it even possible???) to have broadband without a phone line as i make no calls whatsoever and use my mobile all the time and the only reason i have a phone line is to use the internet.0

I would love to see a cable company try and rip up these streets and lay cable. Bloody impossible with this council!!!0
