I leave a bit in a dish in the backof my fridge most of the time. It goes hard after a while - you can then start afresh, using the old stuff for cleaning.

  • I read somewhere that it's good for drains too - a spoonful a week apparently helps to keep them unblocked and smelling fresh.

    Hi wazza,

    This thread should help:

These links taken from that thread may help too:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

I can confirm that it does absorb bad smells (and presumably nice ones too). I've used it successfully on carpets and mattresses that have bees vomited on (sorry!).

It's main use though is as a raising agent in baking. When it is in the presence of an acid ingredient and moisture a chemical reaction takes place between the acid and the bicarb (alkali) which produces carbon dioxide gas which causes the cake/muffin/soda bread to rise. And that is all I know about chemistry;)

We're not supposed to give medical advice here, but it is good for indigestion- presumbly because it neutralises stomach acid.

It is also good for making mini volcanoes if you have kids. Make a mound of sand, hollow it out a bit and fill with bicarb. Add vinegar and the acid-alkali reaction will produce a frothy fizz all over you mountain:D

There are other more useful things you can do with it, i expect someone else will know.

    Hi wazza,

The search can be a pain sometimes. I find searching titles only helps. This thread by squeaky will explain better than I can:

I searched but couldn't find anything ( quick search help )

  • I made a paste today with Bicarb and water and rubbed it on some felt pen on painted walls, also crayon and it came off no trouble.

I always have an eggcup full in the fridge to remove any odours. Works a treat.
