Cancellation of a renewed contract

I took out an 18 month contract some time ago with Orange. I've been pretty happy with them, signal coverage is good, no funny bills (except when I abused the 3G data service the last couple of months!) and so on.

However, I want an iPhone next month. One way or the other, I'm getting my grubby mitts on one

I renewed my Orange contract back around November (I think) - they phoned me one Saturday morning and asked if I was happy with the service and would like to continue. I said "Sure" and picked out an obligatory free phone from their lineup (duly sold on eBay, as I prefer my own handset choices).
Since then I've downgraded my service plan (following a 'Best Plan' phonecall which showed that I was paying for a load of stuff I wasn't using).
I don't recall whether a term was mentioned when I renewed, and I don't think there was any paperwork, I just continued with Orange.

Going online, it says I'm in an 18 month contract, but not the date that contract runs from or to. Do you think I'm in with a chance of cancelling the contract, or am I pretty much SOL until the second 18 months runs its course?

I would hazard a guess that when you renew you'd of signed up for another 12/18 months. You can cancel before this time but would have to pay the remaining monthly fees upfront.

The best thing to do is to call Orange and ask them as they'd have all your details on file
