Price of Lamb?

Most local butchers will give you a fairly decent price on a whole/half lamb too. The supermarket is the worst place to go, although so easy!0

 should've spotted that :rolleyes:0 -
I love lamb. As has been previously mentioned, I tend to buy half a lamb at a time from my local farm shop as it's much cheaper than buying smaller amounts.
While my favourites are leg of lamb and lamb chops, remember that it's worth buying cheaper cuts for caseroles etc that can be cooked slowly eg lamb shanks and neck of lamb.

Yes, Hotpot is not just for the regulars of The Rovers on Corrie!0 -
Hiya
My tummy cant take Beef so we have either chicken or lamb. Dont really like pork apart from bacon.
Mutton is excellent value but find it does need long slow cooking so bunging in SC is great
Sainsburys do an economy mutton mince (99p)which is great value and does us 2-3 meals (for 3 of us) of shepards pie, chilli or spag bol etc. Iceland lamb chops are great value normally get about 10 big chops for around £3-normally serve with mash or boiled spuds and veg
and mint sauce..lol. Asda do frozen cubed new zealand lamb (500g) for £2.39 and does 2 good sized stews for the 3 of us-I do pad out a little though.
I normally buy my Leg of lamb from Makros when on special. On offers its normally 5 good sized half legs for £15-so about £3 each but theres enough to do a huge roast, curry and a sarnie each.

I buy a freezer lamb from our butchers, very good value and lasts quite a while.0

I agree. I was told by partners mum it was out of season a couple of months ago. The local livestock market had only just had a sale of the new season lamb. Would be a little while before the meat is available in the shops.
Best bet to try locally for cheaper lamb, as the supermarkets probably haven't yet managed to acquire enough lamb at a lower price, their mark up remains the same hence the higher price.:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:0 -
Lamb is expensive at the moment because it is out of season. Lambs are born in the winter and normally ready about May or June.
If you are buying Lamb now then you are buying imported Lamb. Fly something half way around the world from New Zealand it is going to cost more.
Hogget (year old sheep) or Mutton (2 years plus) is available and much cheaper, mainly because of lack of demand. It tastes a lot better than lamb though as the animal has had time to grow and develop some flavour.0 -
Thanks for all your advice. In what form do you get mutton? Sorry to be thick but Ive never cooked it. I shall definitely try Iceland and keep an eye out in Makro too.
I just visited Morrisons and bought some chops which were much better value than the ones in the CoOp or Sainsburys. I got two packs of decent sized lamb chops (5 in each) and one was 350g for £3.08 and the other 345g for £2.93. I still feel guilty though because its still expensive compared to other meats.0 -
Hoggetts (mature lamb) are at there best this time of year and cheaper than lamb. Lamb is also more expensive because it is the one farm animal which does not lend itself to factory farming methods (intensive farming) - the reason that pork and chicken is often cheap is because they are often reared entirely indoors in large numbers (at the expense of animal welfare) fattened quickly and slaughtered early - you can't really use these methods with sheep/lambs.
And I agree about buying a whole or half lamb direct from the farm or farmers markets - there are a number of places that do this and it usually works out quite a bit cheaper. In fact one farm is selling half a lamb on ebay - was 50p a couple of days ago but had gone up to £16 last time I looked (still a bargain!)"The happiest of people don't necessarily have the
