Price of Lamb?

My family and I absolutely love lamb, either chops or a nice joint but the price of it is awful! So we don't tend to have it very often. I have a lovely recipe for lamb chops in wine sauce and we all like it but there is so little meat in one chop that we would need four chops each! At the moment in my local CoOp they have a pack of 6 lamb chops for £5.99 which makes it £1 for one chop! Sainsburys are no better.

Does anyone know why lamb is so expensive? After all, we have plenty of sheep in this country! I was thinking of buying a frozen economy pack instead of fresh. What do you think?

have you thought of using mutton? My local butchers - zam zams, is great, and it is much cheaper if you buy a whole lamb or sheep or even half a one at a time. They will cut it up however you want it. If you have a david cheshires they have cheaper lamb and it is fine.

can you still get mutton? lucky you! all we can get in the butchers around here is lamb. I'd love to get some mutton to make proper Scotch Broth, lamb just doesn't have right flavour for it.

I do get great lamb for stews & curries though, from a local Halal shop. it's £6-something a kilo & is lovely, seldom any waste & they'll even cube it for you if you don't want it in large pieces :)

EDIT ... oh that all looks a bit contradictory  but it's about he right meat for the right job

My sister has just been to a farmers market this morning and she told me that she bought a large lamb joint for £6.00 whereas she normally pays £10 for a medium joint in the local supermarket. Might be worth having a look at a farmers market.

I think you are spot on, especially with the mutton for the Scotch Broth. 1a_y_wink.gif

My Dad/Brother are butchers and they still sell mutton - its their biggest seller in fact! Try your local market for both mutton and lamb!

  • I've been well satisfied with the local lamb I bought directly from the farmer. Although I love lamb I wasn't buying it because of the price. Getting a whole lamb directly from the farm is a much better way of buying. See GILLGATE LAMB and Tasetee lamb for an idea of the prices.
