17 bags of refuse a week!

    I'm amazed.

Interesting to note to save money on food the lady went shopping locally (local butcher and farm shop).

Aaaah, have had unexpected visitors and forgot about it!!! Was it any good? Was there anything that would be new to us OSers?

I'm shocked at that woman's attitude to washing clothes - everything at a boil wash! I don't have a tumble dryer, even though Baby Alyx is in terry nappies, and you'd be amazed how I get along just fine without a dishwasher!

Some people are just unbelievable. Anyone else just a teeeny weeny bit smug?! :-)
  • Well it was okay for half an hours light 'entertainment', but the problem with these shows is thay always find one extreme and then show the opposite extreme.

I mean how many people get 'free' gas, how many people spend £250 a week on food and then throw half of it in the bin, and who keeps their house heated at a permanent 28 celcius, leaves all their lights on 24 hours a day and does 4 loads of washing each day!? And then they have to go to the opposite extreme by taking away the washing machine and using a washboard and switching off all the lights and using lanterns! Is it because they think the people on the programme (or the people watching it) are so dim that they won't 'get it' otherwise?

It's like on 'You are What you eat' - when they find people who eat complete c&*p every day, never eat any fresh fruit or veg and do no exercise whatsoever and then make them eat nothing but fruit, veg and hideous concoctions like quinoa porridge (no salt, no sugar) for breakfast, make them do some exercise and amazingly after a few weeks they have lost weight and feel better!

Why not just find an ordinary person/family and show how by just making small changes they can make a big difference - I think that both the people involved would still 'get it' and the audience would find that far more useful as they could relate to it.

But then if they did that I suppose the rest of us wouldn't get the 'shock, horror, I do not believe it ' effect and we wouldn't be able to feel any smugness. :)

Glad I'm not the only one feeling a bit smug! :o Similar to you, my son is in terries and we don't have a tumble dryer. And manage quite well without a dishwasher too!

I felt a bit angry at the couple to be honest. Such shocking extravagance is not a good example to their kids and SO bad for the environment. Glad they pulled it round, if only for the show...

In my pre tightwad days and before I found this site, I wasted a lot of food and was unsure how to reuse and reduce my consumption, and I still have a lot to learn, but this was so extreme!

There wasn't anything I could take from it as their waste was so massive that the tips were a bit redundant to our family. But it did remind me that I'd like a composter. And I loved the chickens. I've only ever had FRESH eggs once and that was at a friend's house. Her chickens were lovely. Don't think the neighbours would appreciate them in our little back yard though.

I loved the thingy they buried 1/2 in the ground for waste food. I've never seen one of those before. We're just using one of those black dustbin thingys for our organic waste. Any idea where you can get those 1/2 buried thingys please?

The programme made me think.... we've got little halogen lightbulbs. OH says you can't get them in the low wattage type. Is that true?

I'm not sure what he's saying here. All my light bulbs (except one on a dimmer) are low wattage energy savers.

My bedside light is a low wattage halogen 12volt at 20 watts.

My fish tanks lights are 20 watt low voltage halogen floodlights.

So is he saying that 20 watts is too high?

I've seen others listed at from 5 watts upwards... http://www.bltdirect.co.uk/

Check the halogen lights listed there - you might find something.
