Childminders charging half fees when they are away on holiday.

I'm not a childminder but a nanny who goes to the childs home, I get paid half pay if the parents are on holiday but nothing if I choose to go away, although they don't have to pay anyone else one of them has to take time off work, with my previous jobs I had to take my holidays when they did.Paid off so far Natwest overdraft £1900 Kays catalogue £200 Personal Loan £2500 Tax Credit £1300 J D Williams

Of course self-employed people get paid for their holidays - the money is built in to the price they charge for the job all the rest of the year, as pinkshoes says:She thinks (and practices) that she adds a little extra onto the daily/weekly childminding fee that will cover the 4 weeks holiday she allows for herself.
If your child-minder is charging for holiday weeks, then her weekly rates should be less than the ones who don't. If she charges the same and for holiday weeks, then she having the money twice!0 -
I personally wouldnt use a childminder and I certainly wouldnt use one who charged for her holidays. How can a charge be justified when the service isnt available.
A nursery will always have cover and the service always available in the vent of staff sickness and holidays.0 -
a childminder runs a business.. which you can pay for, if you wish to use his/her service..
personally i do pay my childminder holiday pay.. i used to be a childminder and found it difficult when my charges were on hoilday ..
childminders who do not charge for hoilday pay put it in their hourly rate..
you may not think you are paying your childminder for holidays... BUT YOU ARE! (most of them)

I don't pay my childminder when she is taking a holiday, but I would have to pay if my daughter was away/sick etc and couldn't go to the childminder, which is right, because it's not the childminders fault if my daughter doesn't go there.
You pay for a service, so if you are not getting that service, why on earth should you have to pay?
We took a holiday last year to co-incide with the childminders holiday, which worked out fine as we didn't have to pay her.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
I have three lovely daughters who love Dorothy (my childminder) and she them. I also pay her when I go on holiday but pay her nothing if she is on holiday, the way i look at it is.......I pay her to keep my children's 'space' and if i don't pay her then she would be quite within her rights to give me space to someone else. I don't know if thats true but thats how i justify it to myself. Not that i grudge her the money. She has a roof to keep over her head and mouths to feed.

i too used to think they had a cheek charging for their holidays, but then again, im paid to take holiday, so why shouldnt my childminder get paid for her holiday?
the only difference is, your employer doesnt get cover for you whilst you are away, so only pays out once. Its the having to pay for additional cover that seems to get to people most. Easiest option, take your holiday the same time as the childminder, then you wont be paying twice.
It seems most people would rather the childminder hid her holiday fees within their hourly rate, then you would be none the wiser, and have nothing to complain about, but you are still paying
Seeing as most childminders only charge half rates for holidays, which on average is £1.50/hr, even when you factor in paying for another child minder on top, you are still paying out less than minimum wage, so its not like you are onto a losing.
The problem is most people dont see childminding as being a business like a nursery, and from experience, most nurserys in my area, dont give any holiday allowance, its full price, 52 weeks a year. as even if your child doesnt attend, they still have the same overheads. Why cant a childminder trade on the same terms?

Not sure all childminders include their holiday pay in their rates.
Mine charges below average rate for the city, is fab and has a waiting list and doesn't charge for her hols. Other more expensive childminders in the area do.
OH is self employed and accepts part of being self employed is not having pay coming in when he goes on holiday.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?
