Dear All,
I hope you can help.
I've been getting very poor speeds for the last few months. But just lately it's been virtually impossible to use. I'm told by BT that my line should be capable of speeds up to 7.5MB. But the fastest I ever get is about 1.8MB at 5:30am. For the rest of the day it's between 0.2MB and 0.8MB.
I ran some tests using the www.speedtester.bt.com and here are the results;
This was at 5:30am
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1803 kbps
and this was at 5pm
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3104 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 266 kbps
I've noticed that my IP profile is for 2mb on both tests. Does this mean that whatever happens I will never get more than 2MB on this line despite BT saying I could get 7.5MB?
I have tried speaking to BT on several occasions with predictable results (no action, no answers, call backs promised but not made etc etc).
I'd appreciate any advice you might be able to give.
Many thanks

Your line is configured for 8 Mbit. If it were configured for 2 Mbit then the upstream would run at 256 kbit max.0

Some useful tips here: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/faq/sections/radsl.html#229
Check your sockets, to see if there is any redundant bell wires connected.0 -
its because of your ip profile...that needsto be increased to 8000A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

That speedtester site tells me my phone number is not valid so wont run a test for me.
Odd.0 -
I presume my IP rofile can only be reset by BT or BT Wholesale? God, I don't think I can face calling the BT call centre again..............0

Do you have a BT landline? Try again: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php
Forget about speedtesters for the mo...0 -
I woudl suggest you ask your ISP to retrain your line - this will take 10 days and could help reset your profile.Fortune's always hiding, I've looked everywhere......0

I had a very similar problem with BT. Speeds were fine for a while, but would then drop and remain very low.
The BT engineer told me it was an issue with some sort of network card at the local exchange and they'd need to do a 'Lift and shift' to replace it. An hour or two after they came out it worked great.
It helps to write to BT and provide as much technical information as possible.0 -
Donnie,
I did the test and got this result;
BT ADSL broadband availability
You are connected to the Bedford telephone exchange.
ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
According to BT Wholesale, your phone line should be able to support a 7.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.
In addition, I have submitted a written compliant via the website. But given that this will probably just get me sent to the Indian call centre again I have also called BT and spoke to the department that deals with people who want to leave BT.
I spoke with a UK based lady who admitted she had no technical knowledge and so put me through to a technial manager, also UK based. He listened to the problem - raised a complaint and has assured me that within 24 hours I will get a call back from a UK based tecchie to sort the problem. He also asked for a quite detailed run down of the problems I've had with the call centre abroad.
We shall see what happens.0 -
Did you take a look at your sockets?0
