And there I was thinking Lockjaw was the common name for Tetanus - not a breed of dog - hell I must be thick :)

the breed, to me, isn't nearly as relevant as the fact that the OP said the dog has attacked before and doesn't like children. any dog will bite if it is provoked and young children don't understand that. as much as i love dogs, i do think that the child should come first, even if that does unfortunately mean that the dog has to be put to sleep.

Well, I've never heard them called by that nickname. Aren't you thinking of Newfoundlands?

You should come and live in south London, then. I've had a staffie run out of its garden gate and attempt to sink its teeth into the back of my dog's neck - it drew blood - we were just walking past and did not even make eye contact until the staffie attacked. In the Park, I always give staffies a wide berth: they are just so flaming unpredictable and capable of doing such damage. I know staffie owners who boast that their dog will have mine (a small terrier) "for breakfast" and about how it would be impossible to unfasten their dog's jaws, if it decided to attack another dog.

Oh dear Misty Blue comments like this don't really strengthen your argument now do they?! They just confrim many of the worrying attributes these dogs have, which indeed include locking on to people or other dogs.

As for commenting on your 'Gordon Setter'! Firstly I am not familiar with the breed so can't comment and secondly what are expecting us to argue about different dogs beginning with A to Z?! I contributed to this post about specific breeds of dogs . So lets not broaden this argument, it may be too much of a strain on your brain!
  • i was attaked at five by a failed police dog.. an alsation bigger than me, it was scary, but the next three weeks i walked past it with my mum, and its owner who used it as a guard dog. he was lovely, he had his own kids.... the problem was this wasnt his home or garden this was his place of work, and i had walked in... not far from my dads work.. i wandered about a bit.
the dog was just doing his job.... since then i have taken on a doberman that was badly abused by a scrap yard and truely wild!.
he in the end used to guard my babys and let me know when they had woken.
now i have a staffie one of my latest dogs, rescued dogs are important, they not only help the dog but they educate kids, my kids are told off for winding each other up... and winding up the dogs,
i accept people havent had the same experiace as me... and many people think they know dog behavior... they have to be sure they do if they involve kids ,
but i think its all about confidence and knowing you are the human, you have control,
voice comamds must be taught and obeyed without delay. then you decide is your dog safe enough for kids, or do you still need to work on that behavior, staffies and rotties get a bad press, they are my most favorite dogs and i think alll dogs can be changed, you must be in control.

It's very telling that you're having to resort to insults instead of producing fact. :) Please note that I have been nothing but polite to you, and in being insulting you're breaching the forum code of etiquette clearly outlined on each page.

In mentioning the Setter I was merely wondering if you think that any dog over the size of a toy breed or spaniel shouldn't be in a home with children.

I have never said that no Staffordshire Bull Terrier has ever caused a human harm. I and the other posters here with knowledge of the breed could provide you with countless anecdotal evidence of positive traits in Staffs.

I have been very polite to you but you have been hellbent on challenging my opinions. Other people have expressed the same opinions yet you have not had a go at them, why is this?

Another thing there is no winning or losing in this, I was giving my opinions and Misty Blue has done nothing but nitpick them. At least I have been able to put my points across with words and not silly smilies! I'm not going to be bullied, I'm entitled to my opinion.

Might I not just as easily say that you've been hellbent on challenging mine? And yet I have managed to express my self succinctly and without insulting you or dismissing your opinions as "stupid."

So now you object to my smiliey use? They're available to use for a reason - to make clear meaning when something might be misinterpreted, as type often can be.

If you can point me to any occasion on which I have bullied you, feel free to report my post to a Moderator and I will apologise unreservedly. However, if you define "bullying" as someone expressing a different opinion to you, then I would hazard a suggestion that a public forum might not be the best place for you.

You're very keen to tell us all that you're entitled to your opinion, and yet anyone holding a different view seems to offend you greatly to the point where you consider it "bullying."

Now if you'll excuse me, I must go and walk my dogs. :)

Tbain, you're showing your ignorance. Staffies are known as nanny dogs, they're one of only two breeds described by the Kennel Club as "reliable with children" (the other I think being the Chesapeake Bay Retriever). Generally staffies are lovely with people, real "people persons".

Whichever poster talked about dog-on-dog attacks by staffies is confusing dog-aggression with people-aggression. Staffies are known for being dog-aggressive, they were bred for fighting other dogs (though this is being bred out of the breed by responsible breeders). But equally they were bred for being very reliable with people, as after fighting another dog in the pit, when they were all riled up and probably injured and in pain, their owner needed to be able to handle them and take them home (they were often carried home in the children's prams!).

All this is irrelevant anyway, appart from correcting the idiotic illogical prejudiced spoutings of certain posters. The dog has shown itself to be unreliable with people. It cannot therefore be left in a home with a baby on the way. End of.
