Warranty Surcharge

I bought a digital radio from Amazon in April, it was a present for my father so I had it sent to his address. Just recently it has developed a fault, I asked my dad to look at the warranty but he said it didn't come with any papperwork, I picked it up to see what I could do. It is a Sharp radio so I looked on their website and it directs you to a nearest approved repairer/dealer. I emailed the nearest one and they said they would repair it but I'd be responsible for p&p and there would also be a £15 warranty surcharge. Can they do this?

Have you contacted Sharp direct to ask about this? I've had Sharp products in the past & found their customer service was excellent.

Should they not prove to be helpful then perhaps it would be worth your while contacting your local trading standards or consumer advice office who will be able to explain your rights fully.

All new items should be covered for at least a year by by the manufacture's guarantee as I understand. I would image it a big help if you have the receipt to prove date & place of purchase.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

amazon should have a record of what you bought on your account and when, it is up to them to deal with faulty goods so email them and see what they say

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

Looking on the sharp website there was no email address for such an enquirey, I rang their phone number and the choices seemed irrelevant to what I wanted. Today I rang the number 0870... the recorded message was spoken by what must be the world champion slow speaker. When you another choice, another set of recordings come up, I eventually got a person and she said, Oh, you need to ring this number, I wrote it down, not realising it was the original number I had rang, very frustrating. I tried ringing the repairer, always engaged. I rang the 0870 number again and one of the choices was if you aren't a member of the public, I tried that and got put through to a help centre in nottingham. The guy was helpful and said they have a repairer in Nottingham who would repair it but the warranty was return to base so I'd have to pay £15 p&p but if I took it in there'd be no charge. I was nearby the other repairer and had the radio with me so thought they might have meant £15 p&p so went to them. They knew me from the emails and said they have to charge £15 because Sharp don't pay them enough to cover the cost of repairs and told me how lots of companies like them are going bankrupt, (I'm not making it up) I said fair enough but I shouldn't have to pay for the repair, they said take it up with Sharp.
I rang Sharp again and made the same choices thinking I was going to get the Nottingham call centre but it put me through to the Manchester switchboard, I explained the problem and she put me through to someone. I started to explain about the repairer, Headland electronic's, as I was speaking he stole my words and said their address and about the £15. Then he said send it to him and he'd replace it with a new one, he asked what it was and when I bought it, again he stole my words and told me what model it was,(the only one on sale in April) I told him I didn't have any paperwork, no problem, it not over a year old because it hasn't been out for that long.
He then said that they don't do the model I have anymore but the new one will have a higher spec,eg. pause live radio. great I said. What about the p&p , they'll reimburse me. He was extremely helpful, the box has been posted this afternoon so I'll see what happens.
  • Received a brand new radio from Sharp today, it has a higher spec than the original. Thumbs up to Sharp.
