Dial up with a Virgin phone line:
I would suggest that you sign up the The Phone Co-Op phone calls service for cable phone lines - and join any pay as you go ISP using 0845 access.
You then get your computer to dial an 0800 number before the 0844/0845 ISP number.
This service gives you 0845 access for 3.95p/min daytime and 1p/min evenings and weekends - no connection fees or per minute charging, and minimum call charge is 1p+VAT making it much cheaper for a quick "send and receive" of email that most other options for calling such numbers over a cable line. Using dial up direct on a Virgin line is very expensive - dialing via the Phone Co-Op is much cheaper.
If you're not a member of any pay as you go ISP you could always join the Phone Co-op's own service - Cooptel - and then you only have one point of contact, and they can be contacted by 0845 helpline, unlike many pay-as-you-go dial up services. I've found them helpful - they will even guide you through the setting up over the phone if you need help.

Remember: You only have to use the Phone Co-Op for internet calls and you can put all other calls through a cheaper method if you perfer. If you are going to be using the Phone Co-Op for calls, the Home User tariff may be better than the Caller Plus tariff (- but remember to dial direct without the Phone Co-op 0800 number for free weekend landline phone calls which Virgin offer free of charge)0
