  • It appears V21 are just trying to curb large downloaders with generic threat emails.

Having worked for an ISP I have seen the type of letters that they send out to the ISP when this type of occasion occurs, and they will specifically mention the IP address, the title of the movie(s), the film/music label they are acting on behalf of. This info is obviously relayed to the customer in any real matter.

I sincerely doubt they have been passed this information from the copyright holders/solicitors etc as their email is way too generic. They've just seen you download a fair bit, assume (possibly, they may see the activity on newsgroups) that its illegal downloading you're doing, then slap this email out to try and reduce the amount of data you're downloading so they make more money out of you.

    Just my personal thought.

Thanks, that's pretty much what hubby thought.

We were already looking at leaving them because of problems we've had, I think we definitely will now, especially as they haven't got their facts right.

    Good decision,

There is no way that any copyright infringement could be detected from the copyright holders from data downloaded from newsgroups - this information is (unless you use a third party newsgroup server, which is still impossible for them to find out about unless they have ties with the third party) as this data is held on your ISPs NNTP server.

All sounds too suspicious to me!
