I use LV for my home insurance and each year I phone and ask for a better rate when iIreceive my renewal. This year my renewal was £206 a jump of £55. when I phoned I was offered their best possible rate of £196.
I decided to do a comparison using MSE and found the same cover with LV for £133 (not the cheapest but I prefer their reputation).
I phoned the company and asked for a comparison to see if there was any difference in cover I may have missed. I was assured it was the same policy and that they could honour the quote over the phone. When I asked for an explanation as to the difference i was told that it was all down to online discounts but that the company was looking to improve their renewal quotes. After a number of emails to the company they eventually confirmed this but stated that there would still be better deals from comparison sites that to accept the renewal price or best price phone quote.
  • My insurance going though an aggregator web site had gone crazy at renewal earlier this year.
there is an insurance broker near where i work so i called in.
they were very helpful, explained a lot that had not been clear before (IPT minimum sums insured etc) and were as competitive as any website. he said people had come to them who had misunderstood the cover they obtained and could be left inadequate insured.
for added peace of mind in talking to an expert it was well worth while.
  • Apologies if this has already been discussed but I am finding it hard to navigate this site.
I got my renewal quote for Direct Line Home Insurance Plus policy for £206, up from £176 last year, so I applied under the wife's name on the DL site and got a quote of £169, however it appears that home Insurance plus no longer includes Travel insurance on new quotes (since 12th Oct), but does on renewals, anyone else noticed this ?
  • My advice would be to never use contents insurance.
Insurance companies are only after your money. Still if I could possibly get cash back in excess of premium, then I would consider.
30 plus years of owning house, but never had any likelihood of claim.
Purely risk management. We are told to either ignore, treat mitigate or insure. In my experience likelihood whilst not zero is worth carrying the potential cost to re-equip.
Good luck with your choice. Obviously your decision should be based on the potential risks involved.

Most people should ignore such advice

Only those rich enough to start from scratch following a catastrophic fire or flood etc etc should consider it!

    Crap advice.

I agree with Quentin, only those rich enough to self insure; should.

Be aware LV put a clause in my contract that says they won't pay out for theft claims if you don't have a specific alarm fitted. See my post a few posts above.
  • Out 'Eco' house has a Green Roof installed by a company called Bauder, I understand its a very high quality construction from a well regarded company however most insurance companies dont seem to know about it and even phoning them they have no idea what it is. Most just revert back to stating that if it is tile or asphalt etc then they cover it and otherwise they don't. Green roofs are not that uncommon so I wonder if anyone here has a green roof and can say who they insure with?
