not a nice comment!

i have sold a top to a buyer who rather than tell me there was a problem with it, left feedback saying "strong smell of smoke but otherwise fine". that weekend i did have my daughter stay who does smoke so it may have wafted up to my bedroom, but, as i told the lady if she had said something i would have offered to have it cleaned for her, the item had £32 price on tag but only paid £5.99 so got a good deal. i feel really angry now as people are now going to have second thoughts before they buy anything! we are non smokers so smoke is not usually a problem. i have not left feedback for her yet and dont know what to put that might salvage my reputation. she ticked positive as opposed to negative or neutral but has still done alot of damage. i have not had one bad comment in the last 12 months and have a 99.6% rating which i think is pretty good for 2 1/2 years of selling. what do you all think?

If she paid on time then you should leave her positive feedback and maybe apologise again. Then you can answer her feedback comment on your ebay with an explanation for your future buyers, ie.. we are a non smoking household....etc... this will show that you are a good ebayer and do not retaliate and were genuinely upset about the problem (which was a one off!)
  • leave feedback via ebay tiawan as you get more letters to use and can explain a bit more to reasure potential buyers

The smell could have also come from your postal delivery man. We have one particular postman who comes in a van and everything smells badly of smoke but he is a heavy smoker.

I wouldn't follow up to the comment made nor would I leave a retalitory neg. As it's a positive comment it will soon slip off the feedback page. Let's face it, when we look through a buyers/sellers feedback, we only really look for the neutrals/negatives. By leaving a follow up comment you're just drawing attention to it. By leaving a neg for her in response will only make you look petty and unprofessional.
It's up to you what you decide to do, but I'm talking from experience and this is just my opinion based on that.

    Good Luck.

I would not post a follow up either, for the same reasons stated above... i.e. You don't want to draw attention to what appears to be a factual comment. ;)

Also, go with a factual positive which can include reference to communication. :)

Could she not have just washed it?? I don't see it as a problem personally, and I'm a non-smoker.

I agree, I always wash any clothes first before wearing anyway.

Some people just like to complain about anything I suppose!

I just received my first buy off ebay and it stunk of fags, I wasn't impressed but wouldn't have felt the need to mention it in feedback. The item was new but doesn't feel new when it smells. I can now see the point of people mentioning they are from a smoke-free home!
