Great Halloween Costume Hunt

About 5 years ago I went to visit a relative in the states at this time of the year and we were there for Halloween. It was fantastic to see how they decorated the outside of their houses, it was just like Christmas but with orange lights outside and pumpkins everywhere. I remember walking along one evening, the autumn leaves had fallen all along the footpaths and the houses were lit up with witches and pumpkins on the porches. The children did their trick or treating between 4pm and 6pm and all the children we saw were accompanied by an adult. They were dressed in beautiful little outfits, not all traditional Halloween, one little girl had a lovely little Lady Bug outfit. It seemed to be a real community thing where the neighbors made a point of decorating their homes and getting in treats for the little ones. I just kept thinking that they would have to take it all down and would be almost time to put up their Christmas decs lol.
I've often thought that it would be a good idea for everyone who was willing to give to the kids on Halloween to put a pumpkin or some sort of sign in their window so that the elderley, or people who didn't want them knocking on their door wouldn't be disturbed.
I will be going to a halloween party myself this year, just need to find my broomstick!0 -
My kids are too young to go trick or treating and I never went when I was a kid. I would only let them go to friends and family if they were to go out once they are old enough.WW Gold Member, trying to maintain !!!Hayden born July 07Tabitha born April 05Poppy born July 030

Dinahmyte wrote:My tip is 'forget Halloween.' Don't let the kids do it. It's not British; it's a horrid import from America and we don't need it here. October 31st is actually All Souls Day - it's not something to make fun of. If we want a fun occasion for the dark nights at this time of year Bonfire Night is coming up. Old people have been badly frightened. Why should we encourage children to frighten people and threaten to do nasty things. Our community safety wardens and police safety officers are giving out stickers asking that no one trick or treat at their doors and our local church holds a light party for children to keep them from going round knocking on strangers' doors in the dark.
A light party - what a lovely idea. I have never allowed my kids to go trick or treating, but they are now 13 & 14 and it is getting harder to stop them getting involved in some way. Nice to see that I'm not the only one that thinks this way.
Each to their own though, and I can't help feeling like a meany cos I have got enough sweets to palm out to all the kids in a mile radius.0 -

Oh and by the way--it's called GUISING NOT trick or treat that's another Americanism that has crept in in DISGUISE !!! Sorry about the pun....
Would be interested to know if any where else in the Uk uses the name guising.
also just for the dude talking about All souls day and that rubbish. It doesn't matter where it comes from its what it means now. The same why as non-christians celebrate christmas and Jesus's birth wasn't Dec25th anyway. The origins of a holiday have a bearing, but what's more important is what they mean to us now. And now its just a chance to dress up and enjoy the spirit of the thin. For kids free sweets and a chance to run round with thier frinds all dressed up. For adults something similiar. It has as much or as little signifigance to original festival as you let it.0
