Again, Google Docs sounds like the way forward.
    Super geek.

It does look to me like you don't need to program anything and that something like Wetpaint free wiki, as shimmy-shang suggested, is exactly what you want, all ready-made.

Did you take a look at that?

The easiest way in my eyes would be to set up a Yahoo Group.

You join with any email address (Doesn't have to be a yahoo one) although you do need to set up an account with Yahoo - but this can be used for loads of things like Flickr and Yahoo messenger too, or just for the group. You act as the moderator and have to approve everyone who applies, so not just anybody can come on.

Any member of the group can upload and download files, and post messages, which come through to everyone's email inbox. You can choose from every message being mailed to you separately (better in the beginning) or a daily digest (better for huge groups with 100+ members)

The only problem I can see is that you don't get very much storage space compared to what you specified - only 100MB.
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right

Wetpaint you can only have 40 attachments total, looks decent otherwise though. What I really need is an online storage drive like www.humyo.com but where there can be multiple users who can upload and download but only I can delete. This is bascially a site for all the students to post up their work and share any notes or resources they make. Yahoo groups again not enough storage space.

Somoene suggested moodle but I'm having trouble finding a free hosting site that I can use with it.

    Would this one suit?

Wombat, the space is only 100MB. It WILL be hard to find a host that will offer enough space for free and that are reliable. Most free hosts will kick you off if you use too much bandwidth or require you to have adverts over your website.
