rofl. i have always wondered which the correct pronunciation was too. I know the americans say rowter (have been watching too much 24:p) & i say it like that too, but the americans seem also to call route rowt...so who knows?!0

Don't call it 'rooter' in Australia. They use raowter like the U.S. but for a different reason.
In Oz 'rooter' is a sexual euphemism

" Router in IT is derived from the word route (meaning to channel or direct)
Router in Woodworking is derived from the word rout (to groove)
... so no mispronunciation there "
Good explanation by xueta.
If we all follow the "Americanisation" of the English language then the scope for ambiguity and misunderstanding is vast so should be resisted as strongly as possible.
Just one example of this is the glaring M$ use of "alternates" for "alternatives".0 -
Dunno about you lot but i'm inputting darta whilst fixing my allumnium color rowter. It worked fine until i spilled some tomayto juice on it and got some potato chips and jello stuck in it.
When i'm done here i might head off down the highway to the mall, put the station wagon in the parking lot and head to the grocery store.
Well that settles if for me, it's a rooter.
GizmoLeeds - no offence but my boss is from Leeds as well and you lot don't have a grasp of the English language, you all seem to have your own version of it (nearly as bad as Barnsley)0 -

Oh !!!!!!, they've discovered our IT secret.... all we do in IT (in the windows world anyway...) is reboot to fix problems... So what we have to do is to invent different ways to pronounce words... like SQL - some prounounce it Sequel and others just say "S-Q-L"... and "lin-ux" rather than "line-ux"... I could go on all day, but I won't
nice threadOnly Irish coffee provides in a single glass all four essential food groups: alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and fat.

Don't mean to get fussy, but
Was not the orignal IBM project called Structured English Query Language hence "Sequel" but it eventually became "S.Q.L", just a simpler abreviation. Not quite the same thing as the OP.
And with regards to Linux, the creator (Linus Torvalds) pronouces it as "Lin-ux", which is probably the best way to say it.
It's basically other languages getting in the way. Like Ralph Lauren is, and should be pronouced like its American creation, Ralph "Lauren" yet some people pronouce it like it's French and there's an accent over the "e". The same goes for Tag Heuer which is pronouced "Hoy-er" not "Hu-er"."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
lol
I always say Rooter and think that sounds much more British
I can't stop myself saying Line-ux even though I know it really has to be Lin-ux (to sound more like unix)0 -
Have to say, its rooter in UK, I guess it depends whether you wanna b like the yankies!!Jazz0
