Silly question but it's annoying me. I have always said 'rowter' but there's a bloke I know (really annoying type who gets on my nerves :p) who says 'rooter'. Which is correct? It's driving me nuts .... must get a life...:o

Must be said with broad Scottish accent too - thinking of Taggart..... rolling my rrrrrr's

I call it a router as r........out....er. Everyone I know calls it this as well.

Isn't a rooter an old potato ready to plant? :rotfl:

    its a rooter.
    americans say r-out-er
when you plana journey you dont say which r-out-te should we take do you ?
a router is called a router because it sends packets on a journey hence the name router

I looked it up on three online dictionarys. All three of them said the pronounciation was router (row..ter). One of them said both ways was fine (row...ter, rooter)

As far as I can guage it's 50-50. Much as I hate 'americanisms', I think 'rooter' (especially said with my accent :p) sounds naff!

    ''Any more for 'rowterrrr' ???

Edit - I reckon I want it to be my 'rowter' more cos I hate this guy, and I can just hear his annoying squealy voice in my head.....

I just had a quick look round the web. WHAT HAVE YOU STARTED!!!LOL

You can see this discussion in many forums. Both methods are correct really. Apparently even in the US both methods are used (east coast/west coast thing).

when you plan a journey you dont say which r-out-te

lol.......the song 'root 66' wouldn't sound the same if it was r-out-te 66.....lol

It is 'rooter' as it comes from the French - en route

root-er. i suspect that if you use the phrases:

    "what's the fastest route...?"
    "we were re-routed via..."

most people on this side of the pond will say it as root not rowt, so why change for this piece of hardware that routes packets? seems odd. besides, there is also a really small possibility people will think you mean rout(n) as in an overwhelming defeat or a low class of people or even (i learn something new every day) " A company, as of knights or wolves, that are in movement." got to love the english language :) (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=rout)

oh and the final thing - if we're going to yankify this then does that mean its o-regano and wo-cester-shire too now (the list is endless...) ;)
