Toilet Problem! Water running alllllll the time

Options
Hi there
We are in rented accom, rather than hassle the landlord I wondered if you could help us.

The toilet has started making shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh noises constantly and a small trickle of water is constantly running into the bowl. Like its at the end of the flush cycle but doesnt stop.

Its one of the push button on the top of the tank ones.
Ive looked inside the tank and cant see anything wrong, the float is floating back to the top ok, thats the only thing i could think of!
There is a small clear plastic bag type thing (looks like a tiny condom) that seems to have torn slightly. Im told that shouldnt be the problem but that was not from a plumber!

Any advice appreciated!!!

Really dont want to hassle the landlord if its just a small problem.

  • If there's a small little plastic screw at the end of the plastic arm that holds the ballcock, tighten it and the ballcock will float higher once the cistern is fall and it will stop water from entering.

If you live in a hard water area sometimes a bit a lime scale can build up on the ballcock and weigh it down, if there is any just scrape it off.

It's probably the filling ball !!!! - these can be adjusted to control the water filling level, usually a plastic screw on the arm that holds the float.

  • Ive pulled the float upwards as far as it will go and it still runs, so i dont know if its that?? Surely if its the highest it can go it would stop?

  • It is not the water inlet valve at fault here, it is the flush mechanism.

    These can be a pain.

You can try adding a little washing up liquid into the cistern as it lubricates the parts. Or you can remove the flush- and clean the seal- or try adjusting it correctly.

These syphons usually have an internal overflow. The water constantly trickling into the pan is from this. On the old fashioned type it would have been discharged through a pipe emerging through an outside wall. The problem is the same with either. Too much water entering the cistern. Either the ball valve is not shutting off properly and it probably needs a new washer or the float setting has altered and it is allowing too much water to enter the cistern before shutting off. Try fixing the latter first as it is easier. You need to adjust the float so that it sits lower in the water than at the moment. Take the lid off the cistern and note the level of the float with the cistern full. Various methods of adjustment are available depending on the make of syphon you have. Look for an obvious methos. either a plastic screw near the valve or often a mini float is fitted which can be adjusted for height. See if this fixes it. Flush it and see if the water stops and look where the float is now compared to the mark before you adjusted it. If that hasn't fixed it hold the float up so the valve should be fully shut. If you see water coming out of the valve then it is leaking and probably needs a new washer. Check that the large nut at the front of the valve (nearest the syphon) is tight.

I asked this question ages ago and mines still doing the running water thing!!lol...nothing worked....the whole inside of the cistern need replacing....I turned the screw in the pipe leading into the floor...it only trickles a little bit now and we can only use that toilet every half hour or so or it won't flush (takes longer to fill)...which is fine...we don't hear the cistern filling now and we only use that toilet in the night.
