I use Tesco Washing up Liquid at home, and found that it was just maybe weaker than the 'higher' brands but with a bit more elbow grease I got about the same results.
I changed from Lynx to Right Guard this week. Doesn't smell as good as Lynx but the anti-perspirant works better and it's cheaper.0 -
New challenges are an alternative to Special K cereal and Mr T's own brand fabric conditioner. Will be back soon with verdicts!!

I have last weeks shopping list in front of me now and I am going through it to see what branded items I have bought and then can see about downshifting them.
I have:
Hovis Best of both Bread - does anyone know if Tesco do an alternative?
Columbus Omega 3 eggs
Wyke farm Cheese
Walls Brilliant Bacon
Heinz Ketchup - this is OH's
Flora buttery
Hellmans Mayonnaise Value mayo is excellent at 42p a jar ! tastes nicer I think
Tilda Basmati rice - OH says this is only nice rice - we shall see!
Hartleys Jam I use value strawberry jam, doesn't have skins in but that suits me finethink it's about 38p a jar
Sunpat Peanut butter
Most of those are just picked up cos we have 'always had them' so i have plenty more things to try.
Its getting exciting!!
other biscuits I like are value digestives, I don't eat brand ones, but I love these
also tesco brand jelly babies, wine gums mars bars and kit kats are very good too0 -
Try the Tesco Value peanut butter. I think it's nice.
Edit: By-the-way, if you're saving up your Tesco Clubcard points, have you joined all the extra clubs that are relevant to you? (Food Club, Baby Club etc.) It really helps to boost the points.0 -
Hi guys,
Just a quicky to let you know where we are with this.
The washing powder has been a disaster. Built up in my washer and made it all mouldy (which I have never had a problem with before) and it made all the washing STINK meaning I had to wash it again which was a false economy!! I even do a 90 degree empty wash once a week but it still gunks up. So I have gone back to Bold.
Toothpaste I have stuck with its a great swap. 44p is a bargain. Biscuits now I only ever buy Tesco value and they taste great.
The salad cream was the same size jar yet the 'use within' date was 4 weeks and on heinz it is longer so i was finding i was throwing it away - also a false economy. (i know some people might use it after the date but my hubby is a stickler for this type of thing).
Onwards and upwards!! Still keep on looking for products to swap to.

We have a new Asda and gradually been trying their own brand stuff. 2 success stories to report:
1. Smart Price Sweet Pickled Onions: these are delicious and at 32p for a jar compared to £1.77 for branded definitely worth the switch.
2. Asda Take a Break (Kit Kat equivalent) - DH loves these and has now started having them every day in his packed lunch. We're having a difference of opinion on this one as I really don't like them at all, but he's happy with them so that's the main thing!
Another couple of notable mentions (although we haven't done a branded comparison are:
1. Own-brand fresh-made and frozen pizzas - we have stopped getting takeaway pizzas now as Asda's pizzas are just too good and cheap in comparison. I get the veggie one and add a pot of Dolio peaches (try it its not as weird as it sounds!) and DH gets ham and pineapple and adds a pot of pancetta. 2 10" pizzas for £6 incl extras and very Yum.
2. Vanilla cheesecake slices - £2.09 I think. We get this as a treat and again delicious.
So far we haven't found anything (except the difference of opinion on the Take a Breaks) of Asda own-brand that we don't like, but its early days. Will keep you posted.MFW Challenge (Tgt Date Nov 07): ACHIEVED FEB 07!
Mthly Savings (Tgt 60% of Inc): Average 41.67% (but we have just paid for a new kitchen!)
Savings Goal £500k (Target Date 50th B'Day Nov 17): 30.41%0
