I have recently switched from using Finish dishwasher tablets (£3.49 for 28) to Tesco Value (£1.78 for 30) and have not noticed any difference at all.

I love the way all the Tesco Value stuff is right on the bottom shelf where no-one can see it unless they bend down, glad MSE pointed me down there :D

Keep an eye on your glasses and more fragile items when using cheaper dishwasher powder.
They may have improved in the last 10 years, but when I was still living with my parents (we don't have a dishwasher), they used cheap dishwasher tablets and all their glasses were scratched and cloudy. It's not economy if you end up buying new glasses!

  • Hi there I was reading about your Tesco nappy experience and agree that Tesco nappies are not good, but a fabulous economical brand is available from Lidl, they are cheap and good quality. I use level 5 for day and at night level 6 pull up so there is no leakage through the sides. They cost about £5 for 44 and the pull ups £3.69 for 18 at level 6. I would recommend that you try them they have never let me down, also the wipes thick I have used them on my little boy for 2 years. Hope that helps

  • 12 – SWAPPED Heinz Salad cream light £1.88 FOR Tesco salad cream light- 90p. SAVING OF 98p.
VERDICT – Cheap salad cream to me usually tastes fruity and not nice but this was really nice. Very good taste not unlike the heinz one and at half the price is a good saving. LEVEL DROPPED!!!

13 – SWAPPED McVities jaffa cakes 80p for 12 FOR Tesco VALUE jaffa cakes - 62p for 24. SAVING OF 28p (but really 98p) .
VERDICT – OMG these are LOVELY. I am ashamed to say I ate a whole packet of 12 yesterday. Maybe they wont save me money as I will have to buy more :rotfl: LEVEL DROPPED!!!

12 – SWAPPED Custard creams (any branded we usually aren't too fussy) approx £1 FOR Tesco VALUE custard creams - 42p. SAVING OF at least 50p.
VERDICT – YUM YUM YUM these are lovely. The don't stay together as well as normal custard creams and are a bit crumbly but they are very very nice. Has inspired me to check out other Tesco Value biscuits. Tis not helping with my BMI challenge  LEVEL DROPPED!!!

I have recently tried Tesco cornflakes (think 500g are 98p) where as my normal Kellogs are £1.40. I honestly can't tell the difference between them :-)

However I tried tesco own brand gravy granules and they are rubbish! Going back to Bisto

I have last weeks shopping list in front of me now and I am going through it to see what branded items I have bought and then can see about downshifting them.

    I have:

Hovis Best of both Bread - does anyone know if Tesco do an alternative?
    Columbus Omega 3 eggs
    Wyke farm Cheese
    Walls Brilliant Bacon
Heinz Ketchup - this is OH's
    Flora buttery
    Hellmans Mayonnaise
Tilda Basmati rice - OH says this is only nice rice - we shall see!
    Hartleys Jam
    Sunpat Peanut butter

Most of those are just picked up cos we have 'always had them' so i have plenty more things to try.

    Its getting exciting!!

Urgh I bought some own brand (although i think they were co-op) from the last time I did this a few years back (when I dropped straight to value range which wasn good) they were HORRID and just pure salt.

Bad thing is I use Bisto best as its yum. Thankfully i have almost a full jar so dont need to target them JUST yet :D

OH used to have hienz tomato ketchup but way too expensive now has asda own brand (not the smart price) one. just as good. We did try asda smart price salad cream but found to be quite vinegary so went back to asda own. we buy alot of tinned veg, beans, tomatoes as smart price or value ones and haven't noticed any difference. Think some brand come out the same factory. Have tried asda own weetabix compare with branded one and found asdas to be a bit like chewing cardboard so went back to branded, but cornflakes and rice krispies we have asdas own.

will try some of the items you've mentioned as would never have thought to change

    cheers

If you have a 'Farmstores' near you, Tilda rice is still £1 a kg. Also, other branded goods are cheap there like Nescafe, Typhoo tea and other things now and again. We like Asda low-sugar baked beans and always buy Smart Price red beans and tomatoes. I also prefer the Smart price orange juice (less sweet) to other brands. In Iceland, our favourite Burgen bread is 2 for £2 (hugely cheaper than anywhere else) and Flora pro-activ is also on offer. I also buy Heinz baby beetroot (£1.17 for a bigjar) and 2 litres of flavoured water (Perfectly Clear?) 2 for £1 in there they've been on offer for ages. I suppose I'm hanging on to some of my favourite brands but not at big prices.
