try and back up any data you think is important .
Do this first ...Other than having a look around for dust piled in the cooling fans .
Then at least you have everything you need if it gets worse.

I have one of them usb laptop fans, i know i can do the back up data but i was trying to avoid that

If you can download PCWizard here on another machine and get it on the laptop, you should be able to monitor the CPU temperature, depending on the laptop - works on most models.

Have you set up your own account? if you have and have add min rights go to safe mode ETC through that. It should work just the same.
Also you can run this when you are on line http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/default.htm work on Vista also!

Also when i go into the repair functions i need to access it as an administrator and i don't have a password for it!

Any help available on this please

    Thanx[/quote]

PCWizard is excellent - if you don't want to install any more software on the laptop, you can download it and burn it to a CD - it will run fine from there too.

Do you have a Windows installation CD? If so, boot the laptop from that and try a repair install (you can do this in XP, but I'm not sure if the feature is the same in Vista).

Don't bother with the repair console unless you're familiar with it - proceed as though doing an install and see if it finds your existing installation. Then select the repair option.

If you have critical data on the hard disc I would do as Globalds suggested and backup before proceeding, even if that means pulling the drive, getting an adapter and fitting it in another PC to copy the data.

Sorry, never used Vista. Hopefully someone will come along soon who does.

IIRC, with XP you can use any Windows CD (provided it's the same version) to repair an installation, so hopefully it's the same with Vista.
