dog not being taken for walk

When I did take him for walks he didnt get that much exercise I suppose as he just wanted to sniff and look for food (he is obsesseed with food).
Have you tried a bustercube or a tug a jug toy? I find they're pretty good for keeping a food-obsessed dog happy and active as they make them work for their food a bit.
Maybe a cheaper alternative is to set up treat treasure hunts for him around the garden. Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again. - C.S. Lewis0 -
Hi Clare,
Just wondering how you are getting on?
And wanted to say well done to rachel for volunteering, please let me know how you are getting along with your new four legged friends.

On the mental stimulation side of things the Nina Ottosson range of toys are excellent for dogs
They are puzzle toys for dogs, you put tasty treats in and they have to work out how to get it out.
I'm not sure if i'm allowed to put up links to where they sell them, and they are quite pricey but if you do a search on google and youtube you'll see what i mean
My partner works for guide dogs as a trainer and they use them there all the time
Go have a look :-)0 -
Hi
You can invent a lot of toys for dogs recycling items used in your home. Try a plastic drinks bottle with a handfull of dog biscuits replace cap lightly. Or an old childs shape sorter with larger or odd shaped dog biscuits inside. Other treats like bits of cheese or sasauge hidden under yoghurt pots and stuffed into old socks hidden round the garden makes dogs forrage for their treats, a natural instinct.
Sure you can come up with more clever cheap ideas.
Try your local Freecycle (long shot I know but ask for a treadmill?) I saw in a recent copy of "Your Dog" magazine some company had invented a treadmill for dogs, maybe you could write to them suggesting you do a trial in return you will give good reviews (worth a go dont know until you try).
Other item you could request from Freecycle are paddling / swimming pool for your dog to swim in (another form of exercise). Our local group has a freecycle cafe where other 'comunity' posts not connected with giving / receiving can be made. Theres quite often ones for dog sitting or walking services so see if yours has 1 or ask if for reccomendations. Maybe a college student training in animal care / vetenary skills would be willing to help out - pop an ad in local paper?
Anyway good luck and keep me updated!
I just as guilty for not walking our dogs, we have a smallish garden and they lurcher & greyhound so not so small dogs but they get enough stimulation I think except they are a little unsocialised and not very obedient or quiet like many others I see in neighbourhood. I cant walk them due to back condition (AS) and husband usually too busy or too tired!0 -

Hi
Please don't re home your dog I have 3 Dobermanns and they don't get to go out as much as they did , my daughter is ill and she is lucky as she backs on to a field and 2 people after school take her dogs for a walk on there for her,
But try a Buster Cube http://www.bustercube.com/ keeping your dogs mind active is the key as you have a large garden like me .
or a black Kong http://www.doggiesolutions.co.uk0
