There should be a dial on your dashboard, when in a 30mph zone, watch for the needle going past '30', then lift your right foot off the throttle a little, until it drops to below the '30' again.

    Works every time for me.

i know exactly what you mean Paul, but can you honestly tell me ,when you turn into a road - you KNOW what the speed limit is ? somtimes its 30 (lamp post both side / build up area blah blah ..) but sometimes its 20! sometimes its 40 , 50 !!! some 50 - i thought anyway is in fact 30 !! ! i am NOT asking for symphathy or excuse here , i am asking for HELP!

BTW , i do 60k mile /yr and i cant afford to loose my license.

I recon if you stay below 10 you should be fine.

Oh hang on, they would do you for being to slow then :)

You could stop washing the number plate.

My boss at work spent a lot of time trying to solve this same problem.
If I recall, he had a Tomtom, and a Road Angel - just for the speed cameras. Then he upgraded the Road Angel because they did one with satnav on it. On early tests, this gave terrible directions, so he went back to the Tomtom again, but has to keep the Road Angel as the speed camera lists aren't good on the Tomtom.
Thing is though - they could put a mobile speed camera anywhere, tomorrow, if they wanted. No matter how much you spend, no device will ever be 100% up-to-date, and if its wrong one day and you get flashed - YOU still get YOUR points, and it's still YOUR insurance premium that goes up.

The easiest way is to assume it's 30mph if there are streetlights and its residential, unless it says otherwise.
It is a maximum limit, after all - not a required speed. There are the odd 40, 50, etc (usually clearly signposted), but you'll only normally find 20s near schools, during schools opening/kicking-out times.

Look out for signs at the side of the road, they are circular with the indicated speed clearly marked on them.

Of course if you don't see them, you are driving without due care and attention.

If you can drive 10 miles without getting pulled by the police, you're doing well. It's a legal requirement to have a readable number plate.
I had a laugh to myself when I saw a guy in a flash new Porsche, in the Clifton area, getting pulled over for a dirty number plate...maybe he's spent so much on the car, he can't afford to wash it.

If you cannot work out the speed limit, then perhaps you shouldn't have a licence in the first place? The rest of us manage quite well.

If there's no markings and it's a built up area, assume 30. If it's anything else, there will be speed signs galore.

I have no sympathy. Read the highway code - I've been driving for over 20 years and only have 1 speeding ticket (just after passing test, boy racer etc), but I knew I was breaking the speed limit, and got caught fair and square. Slowed me down!

I wouldn't suggest relying on a sat nav to give you the right speed limits anyhow ... I tested our works Tomtom One on a journey home and it got it wrong twice:-

First time, I'm going along main road (60mph), there's a side turn into a village (30mph down the side turn) - the Tomtom tried to tell me that the main road also had the reduced speed limit.

Second time, going through a different village - previously a 40mph to 30mph zone but 6 months ago this was changed to 30mph throughout and extended at each end - the Tomtom had the old boundaries and limits.

But to answer your question, the Tomtom One that I was testing had an audible "bing" for exceeding speed limits. Not that I was relying on it, nor would I suggest that anybody else does. Simply answering your question.

I'm led to believe that the latest version of TomTom maps include road speed data, and the ability to warn if you are over the limit, though I'm still using a very old version of their software and so have never tried it.

I ~think~ it's tied to their MapShare feature, which may mean that the speed data has been contributed by other TomTom users - in which case I wouldn't put tooo much faith in its accuracy!

If you take a look at this thread and the ones linked, it looks as though the system itself may be at worst flawed or at best hard to update correctly:

Now the stupid answers are out of the way, take a look HERE not a satnav but you already have 2 of those so this should sort the speed problem for you.
