Handset Only Upgrade??

I was looking around in Phones4U yesterday and a sales assistant came over to ask if he could help me. I told him i was interested in the N82 and N95 8 gb and was thinking about upgrading because my contract has expired. The problem is my contract is only £20 per month and as they are new phones i would have to pay a lot to get the phone because of my low monthly spend. I told him i don't mind changing my tariff because the one i am on at the minute is a very old one with only off peak minutes and texts but i dont want to be paying more then about £25 per month really because that will probably give me all the minutes and texts i need. Then the sales assistant said something about doing a "Handset only upgrade" where i could get a new handset for free from phones4u but keep my existing tariff then change/upgrade the tariff later if i wanted. Obviously i liked the sound of this because it meant i could get a nice new phone without having to spend any more on my line rental but I just can't see how this would work because phones4u wouldnt be making anything out of it so can anyone tell me:
Have you heard about this kind of deal before?
How does it work?
Would i be transfering my contract over to phones4u?
Is it as good as it sounds?
Or was he just pulling my leg to try and get me to sign a new contract with phones4u?

Any ideas or advice about what to do?

Thanks

Look into it further before signing anything.

I bet you will have to sign up a new line and then port your number over.
  • I wouldn't mind signing up with phones4u and porting my number but I cant see how they would give me a nice new top of the range phone if i am only bringing over my £20 per month contract because i would essentially be the same as any new customer and they wouldn't offer those new phones with that kind of deal to a normal new customer would they?

also, are you sure it wasn't one of those "£20 a month for the first x months, and £35 thereafter" or anything that she was offering? it seems really unlikely that they'd just allow you to change at a later date, as you say, they'd get nothing out of it.
your contract won't be with phones4u, it will be with your provider as far as i'm aware (ie Vodafone/Orage/o2) but if there are any problems with the handset then obviously they would be dealt with by phones4u. (I presume that's correct although if anybody knows better, do say!)
