Where do i stand with the kids

I am in total agreement with the two previous posts. You must put a stop to the visits to dad's house until there is a lot more authority and supervision put into place. If he doesn't like that, then tough - but until he starts listening, thinking and putting the children first, he is not fit to have them with him in any case, in my view.
I find it extremely revealing that his own mother is on your side (and the side of her grandchildren) over all this. Your children are vulnerable and virtually defenceless - they have only you to fight for them so tell the ex how it's going to be and stick to your guns. One day, they WILL understand why you dug your heels in because eventually children grow up and recognise the failings in the adults around them. They will one day realise that he is stubborn and stupid to the point of being morally derelict.
Better a blazing row with your ex, better that the children get upset at not seeing dad enough, better a court battle than another phone call when you are 100 miles away to say that this time it's your child with a wine bottle through the skull!!!0
