dry cleaning - any ideas on doing cheaper?

I have a black suede jacket I bought about 4 years ago which I got a bargain of about £40, its smelling a bit sweaty so I want to get it dry cleaned.

But, my dry cleaners which is family business on the corner are to be fair are great for simple stuff (I have had trousers with holes in the pockets and a broken zip which just needed the fastener bit replaced for about £5)

This and other dry cleaner's business models seems to be based on the value of the garment, but things like suits and leather jackets I think seem to be cheaper than they used to.

anyway they want £35 to clean my old jacket, and I dont want to throw it away and buy another one, is there a better solution to this, maybe there is a way of doing dry cleaning yourself?

You can buy sheets which you put in the tumble drier, but I don't really know how well they work.

Is it worth hanging it outside for a few hours to see if that helps?

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

How about a different Dry Cleaners such as Bolloms? I was shocked to read the price the other place is charging.

When you say sweaty it depends just how sweaty it is. If there's a lining inside could you not carefully and lightly go over the arm pit areas with a damp sponge/cloth which has been dampened with a little and very mild detergent. Then lightly go over the same areas with clean water a couple of times. Afterwards put it outside on the line, on a coat hanger to dry off on a sunny and breezy day. Make sure you peg the hook of the hanger well so it doesn't blow off of the line!

I think if it's not too bad that's what I'd do. Good luck.

    You still can use them.

Asteroid, have a look at this thread

to find out how to get the extra points you need. Or if you are in a hurry you can often buy deals on ebay for about 1/2 price.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • Have you a Morrisons nearby. Our one is a good half hour drive away, but they have a dry cleaners which are very good value.

I always save up my dry cleaning for when I know I am heading that way and pop in and go back a week or two later.

    Well worth it, much cheaper
