A friend and myself have spent hours "window shopping" for the ultimate cheap and efficient car.
I originally said 106 Diesel.
Today I was thinking about the Fiat Cinquento and the Citroen AX.
Meanwhile he's advocating a old Polo 1.3.
The prices we're looking at are around £400-£600.
The ultimate car will be as small and light as possible, ie: hopefully no pointless extras weighing it down. It's possible that we might strip further bits out of them.
Ideally the kerb weight would be 750KG, then 75BHP would be enough for 100BHP/tonne.
We believe that such a car could be very cheap to buy, very efficient to run, and a lot of fun.
What's your closet cheap car?

does anybody remember the original Daihatsu Charades?
They did a 3 cylinder diesel version, which was advertised as being able to achieve 100 mpg's.

MK3 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6. Should get 42MPG and it's a £200 banger car so the £400 you save buying it would compensate for the lower MPG.0

Citroen AX diesel. Light as a feather with plastic tailgate. We used to have fun lifting our friends AX and placing it in awkward positions. The man without a signature.0

The old 205 diesels were quite quick and returned decent figures. I was looking at them a few nights ago to replace my Mrs Ka.0

Remember, the cheapest car to run is one that doesn't continually have problems, so on that basis I would nominate a Nissan Sunny.;)0

Suzuki Swift 998cc every time. 55 mpg and runs like a sewing machine. The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.
