First house checklist! Please help!

Hi all!

First time buyers here, moving into our house in a few weeks (faster, faster!)
Just wondered if anyone had a list of stuff that you need to buy when you get your first home.

We've got some stuff from relatives like sofas, dining table and chairs and other bits and bobs. I'm dead keen to start thinking about the little things, like a tin opener and a wooden spoon! Call me sad, but it's quite exciting (not that I'll feel that way when I'm having to pay for all the stuff and the cost is slowly going up and up!)

I know there'll be a thousand things, but if anyone has ideas of stuff I might not have thought of or even a list that they have made for their house it would be great!

Cheers!

I don't know but Ikea is so good for first house stuff. We still have our bottle opener, peeler, colander, fish slice etc. and they were really cheap.

My cousin is moving into a house that I've bought tomorrow and I don't think he knows what's about to hit him! He's packed about two bin bags and gone out to meet 30 girls from Newcastle tonight. I guess he wasn't worrying about the same stuff as you but is quite excited about having a proper double room! :grouphug:

buildings and contents insurance to cover all those new items.....

it might be easier asking you what you have already, then we can see what might be missing

if you haven't got time to list everything on here, write down each room on a piece of paper then list what you think you will need - I reckon the kitchen will be a long list ;)

Contact your local fire service, many fit you a free smoke alarm.
There are organizations that sell seconhand furniture (and stuff like kitchen utensils cheaply) to those on a low income.
Most kitchen gadgets are a waste of money
  • I would recommend joining freecycle. There are lots of people on there giving away free bits and pieces that you think, "actually, that would come in handy"
Joined it myself recently and have got a few things from there, but also given more away ! One man's (or womens) junk is another's treasure and all that !

I moved into a furnished flatet, but I wanted my own bits and bobs, so I bought:
    - 2 plates from Ikea, 19p each
    - 2 bowls from Ikea, 19p each
    - 2 small bowls from ikea, 19p each
    - set of 6 glasses I can use for any/all drinks from Ikea, £3.65
    - 2 mugs
    - GOOD tin opener (there were 2 here but I couldn't work out how to use them)
    - pizza baking tray (doubles up for all other purposes too if you stick some foil on it
    - 1 tray
    - 1 good (Tefal), small frying pan
    - 1 frying spatula
    - 2 quilt covers/pillows
    - 1 bath towel
    - 2 hand towels
    - 2 tea towels
    - couple of small pyrex-style dishes, Asda £1.50 each

That's pretty much all I needed. There were 3 saucepans, kettle, microwave here. Not needed anything else.

It's better to buy things only when you've needed them 3-4 times than buying it all up front then never having a need.

Today I bought a rolling pin, my first ever, all of £1 from Asda, having made 7 pizzas now and only working out after the 3rd one that a rolling pin might be a good idea, then using an unopened roll of tin foil to roll the next 4 to see if that was better. But when I made the first one I didn't know if I'd ever do it again, so no point getting things you might never use.

IKEA do two basic start boxes for kitchens.

Startbox Tillaga contains 38 basic kitchen utensils including pans for £49.99:

Startbox Plus is a 60 piece dinner service with 6 place settings each comprising of fork, knife, spoon, teaspoon, deep plate 25 cm, side plate 20 cm, plate 27 cm, mug 30 cl, red wine glass 30 cl and glass 20 cl for £55. The cutlery and glasses are dishwasher-safe. The bowls, side plates, plates and mugs are dishwasher and microwave-safe. The crockery is feldspar porcelain, the glasses are glass (!) and the cutlery is stainless steel. They sell all of the items individually at the store so you can buy more teaspoons and they'll still match and you can replace broken items too:

    Good luck!
  • Wow! Just checked back and seen all your fantastic ideas. Thanks for all your help, I just can't wait til we have a date to pick up the keys and get cracking!
A trip to IKEA and a LARGE supermarket will be a good starting point and I'm guessing over the first couple of months we'll pick stuff up as we work out what we need!

    Measuring jug (cheap, plastic).

Also, extension leads - once you move in, you'll realise that the sockets aren't in the right place for your stuff ...
