You need to make an appointment at his Town Hall/Registrar place - the place where he was born.

Then you go and take £7.50 I think - actually it may be £10... can't remember.. but they will give it you there.

It's a really simple process in Liverpool - you just walk in and out :D

But not so, in other places.

    Good Luck :)

i dont know if this applies to birth certificates, but when i needed a copy of my marriage certificate for my divorce i had to wait 24 hours before it was ready.

this may not apply to all areas though
    2011- new year, new start.

Thank you all so much for your replies. I've just gone onto the website and managed to order a replacement, £10 will be here in 14 days. My heart sank when I read the first post about having to go to the registrar office where he was born, 600 mile round trip (not very money saving with petrol as it is) so the online option was just excellent.

Now he just needs to find his passport.......men!

It was the english system we used and it was really easy to do, should have the certificate in 2 weeks.

  • The GRO website is a staple for all family history buffs so I know it well.

While you are at it think about getting duplicates of all your family's vital certs and keeping them all in one file somewhere safe ie with your will. When my husband died I not only had to produce copies of his birth cert but also my daughter's the marriage cert and the decree nisi for my divorce in order to claim his death in service pension and the widows benefit stuff.

Another thing to note is that when you registered a birth you were given the option of having a short certificate or a full one. The cost difference meant that most people opted for the short one.

The full cert gives full details and is a copy of the register entry giving parents etc - the short one basically just says you were born on such and such a date. If you only have a short cert it may be worth your while getting a full one. IF you ever need to prove that you are your parents' child ie for will purposes the short one won't be sufficient. It may also tell you something you didn't know!:rotfl:

My son , born in Barking, needed a full birth certificate but sooner than the two weeks quoted on various websites. It would have been nearly a 200 mile round trip to get one in person.

I rang the Barking & Dagenham Registrar Office and was told I could do it by post, all I had to do was write in with the details enclosing a cheque for £7 and a sae.

Posted the letter on Tuesday afternoon and received the birth certificate on Thursday morning. Great Service!
  • I am getting married abroad, and now it seems for paperwork purposes you need to have the full birth certificate and not just the small one. I and my partner had the small one (well at least I did before I lost it!)

I went in person to my local place of birth and paid up £10 and I had it the next day. Then when looking online for her place to do it, they had a form online where we could pay over the internet, and assuming the details were correct they would post it out.

We had it the next day, all for a tenner. Was very happy it could be done this way. I think this was for hertfordshire only but you may want to check on your CC website to see if you can do the same thing.

Oh and I would suggest you get the full one if you are going to get one. For the sake of a couple of quid it could come in handy in the long run.

    Thanks

    Phill
