Hmm.. £18.94 delivered for a 512MB drive would be a good price for a brand new drive, but not for a refurb.

Looks like an excuse to plug referral links to me :rotfl:
  • The words companies use like 'refurbished' makes me laugh, So, how do you refurbish a flash drive? Do they strip it down and do a complete service on it :-)

What they do is test it for a few seconds (some don`t even do that, I remember some people having trouble with the so called creative 'refurb' muvo mp3 players) if it seams to work then they sell it on, If it doesn`t then they bin it.

    Rant over

i agree that 'refurbished' does not look so good BUT my oh had been looking at one of these http://www.mymemory.co.uk/memory/SanDisk/Micro/Cruzer/MP3/Player/Companion and had guessed that the only usb flash drive that would fit in it would be sandisk which are generally stupidly expensive so this could work out quite well if that's what you want

So a refurb is basically going to be the box, and carry handle cords, etc not product.

Flash memory is tough it can withstand boiling in water for hours, being hit with a golf club etc with no problem.

Item to fail are the USB connectors so check these are ok when you get the unit. Format the drive and use a diagnostic program to check the disk is ok, or pop some files on it and check the CRC.

These refurb units should be no more or less reliable than new product. The only things to watch for are

    1) Viri on the media / Spyware
    2) Broken / Damaged USB connector

The Flash memory chips are embedded in epoxy resin, even if you run over with a car and crush the connector the data on the chips will be fine. Any decent recovery shop will be able to recover the data.

If a media failure takes out ALL you data just copy it to another place. You should always have at least 2 copies of important data.

San disk is a good brand and has a good reputation for product quality and support. They invented the Compact Flash format etc.

Good price for 512M. Refurb just means they formatted the disks and perhaps refreshed the package, you might get and old box ;) But the media MTBF (mean time between failure) will be the SAME as boxed new product.

I work in semiconductor systems design for life critical applications so I am familiar with the failure mode analysis for such devices. There "robust nature of these devices is well documented in the technical press" hence their use in military and medical situations. These are some consumer stories with retail product:

    Soooooo.... Two questions. :)

    Q1.
Am I right in saying I should also have no real concerns about buying the Refurbished Sandisk Compactflash MyMemory are selling?

    Q2.
On the Duty VAT ssue, As I need two, do I really need to concern myself with the £18 limit? ..... ie can I happily order two at the same time?

Anyone any experiences or had to pay Duty/VAT on goods from Jersey?
