oh this is funny...i had a look at my haynes manual for my car and under pre-heating system, what you are talking about, is the same what we have been mentioning as RELAY...the pre-heating system unit picture in my manula is the same one that i had send you and there is no other pre-heating system...i am sure....0 -
I was just going off what someone else told me, but if that's it then you only have one thing to replace!! Get it started and go and price a replacement.0

The problem with running a wire to the dashboard is it is a high current circuit so you run the risk of the wire or your car going up in flames!! It would be much safer to just open the bonnet and either close the contact with a screwdriver or run a lead from the battery to the glow plugs for the 10secs that you need it. Once the engine is warmed up you shouldn't need it at all.
yes i found it attached to the expansion tank and its the same one what we have been calling as RELAY...0 -
So it is a relay with the heating timer circuit built into it. Still needs a new one though!0

Dave_G wrote:If it was me, Id go to your local scrapyard and get both bits for about £10. It's hard from here too because I can't see if the relay would work if it had the correct input voltage from the pre heating unit.
Have you identified which pins on the relay get fed 12v when the ignition is switched on (ie from the pre heating circuit, not the feed that goes on to the glow plugs) ? If you have, then try providing a direct 12v feed to that from the battery, if the relay still doesn't close then it needs replacing.
If after replacing the relay it still only closes for 1 sec, then you also need the pre heater.
I'll go and ask more questions for you.
yes i know which pin on the relay/pre-heating unit takes in the 12v feed (not the one that goes on the glow plugs)....it is the point A in the picture i send you...i will try giving it direct 12v from the battery and check that way...and if after that if the plate pulls down for just 1 sec then i will replace it...
just to confirm...to try the above, i will turn the ignition on, take a wire, touch it to the batter +positive and the other end of the wire i will touch it to the point A (power feed ) on the relay/pre-heating unit...right ?
will let you know...0 -

yeah probably it has a built in timer in it...its got some coils and god knows what all in there...i am sure thats it...coz thats the only bit thats attached to the exp. tank0 -
Yeah that's what I mean, you probably won't even need the ignition on because you will be providing the 12v feed from the battery0

i just did this...connected the pre-heating unit (as i had taken it off) with the earth cable & cable running from this unit to the glow plugs, I DID NOT PLUG IN THE POWER CABLE on the pre-heat unit...then took a wire, touched it to the battery +positive and the other end of the wire i touched it to the point A (power feed) on the relay/pre-heating unit
the plate DONT MOVE at all...no movement...nothing happens...0 -
Not sure why nothing happened, but since the plate doesn't make contact I would just replace the whole thing anyway.0
