How does SORN work?
Options
Hubbys scooter has been in his mums garage for ages, unmoved.
Tax ran out end of last month.
Hubby can't renew tax as it needs its first MOT.
We go on holiday on Sunday week.
Would much rather leave MOT till we get back.
Do you need to notify them for it to be 6 weeks over or how does it work?
Will he get in trouble for not renewing & not telling them?

Automatic fines are now dispensed from DVLA's computer. I would SORN it ASAP - even if it is only for a few weeks.
I assume your husband had a tax renewal notice?? On that there is a long reference number and you can do it all online using that reference number.
When you want to re-tax it, just pick up a tax from from the post office when you are ready.0 -
Probably safer to SORN it (though it takes the DVLA up to 4 weeks to confrm by letter that you're done so  ). You can always start the process of taxing and MOT-ing when you're ready then, and know that you've abided by the rules.
I was looking at Tesco clubcard deals yesterday and you can get a £10 MOT done using your vouchers at Nationwide Auto centres (don't know if they do bikes, but it might be worth looking in to).

PS it's easy to SORN online!:wave:0 -
Yep you need to SORN asap.
Officially you have 14 days after expiry of last disc where you are guaranteed not to be fined as long as it is off the road.
However, as long as you do it in the the same month that that the tax is due (so during June in your case) then you should be ok because you are not missing a month.
So do it now. Either use reference no on V11 or V5C (logbook) over phone 0870 850 4444 or online via www.direct.gov.uk or take V11 to Post Office and they will do it there if you put cross in SORN box.
When you want to put it back on road you just need to tax it with V5C and this cancels out the SORN automatically.
The only time it can go on road untaxed is directly to and from pre-booked MOT as long as its insured.
V11 can only be used once, so if you use it to SORN then you can't use it to re-tax.

it is either/or I'm afraid.....even for a short while.
[I have declared SORN on a car, only to tax it two weeks later.....after a change of mind.]No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -

This is not true, you need trade plates to do this. The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.

This is incorrect. From the government's DirectGov site (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_069671):Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test
You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station provided you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle.
This also applies to vehicles being driven to and from a prearranged test at a Vehicle Inspection Check (VIC) test station, an approved weight testing station and reduced pollution test.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
the above also holds true if you have a car that needs to be registered...ie driving without reg number plates....because they haven't been issued. No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0

My SORN expired 31 May and I didn't renew as intended to get car MOT'd and on the road. Unfortunately, I've only just done it and it looks like I'll get fined for the 5 weeks it's late because the website won't let me tax it online and keeps saying the Continuous Registration Enforcement Centre MAY be in touch with the registered keeper. My car is a "historic" vehicle and it's free tax; it was SORN'd for nearly 4 years; it hasn't been on the road illegally and there's no fraud involved. As always it's the conscientious people that get punished - what a farce - I know it hasn't happened yet but anyone want to take a bet on it?!0

Perhaps they'll fine you a multiple of the missed duty:D .0
