dumped border terrier

hi im just venting my anger.daughter belongs to an equestrian forum and a post was put up for a home for a border terrier who was tied by a rope to a gate and left.somebody handed him in to the local vets looking pretty sorry for hiself and smothered in fleas and flea bites.he had no collar and no micro chip and no one has claimed him.to cut a long story short we have took him in to foster him as he hated the kennels he was in.i have two jrts and he gets on well with them but really need to find him a loving home.he is also toilet trained does not bark as we have not heard him yet and can be stroked when eating his dinner.not sure what he is like with children but what we haveseen from him so far is promising.i fear this little mite ended up like this due to someone falling on hard times so it really is quite sad.have just done an email to battersea to ask if anyone on their wating list requires a border but the person who deals with the emails is away for a week.i will keep him to a loving home is found but just felt i needed to let of steam about it and will keep people posted what happens julie.

Julie - you are very kind to have fostered this little dog in his hour of need. Many people have hearts of stone and would not have bothered. He sounds fantastic - he will find a loving and caring home eventually. Whoever left him tied up should be ashamed...but then again they didn't put him in a bag and throw him in a river or let him loose on a motorway etc etc. It's a rough patch in his life but he will ultimately be loved and cared for because of what happened to him - not that that makes it right, but IMO because of you his future is rosy.

If keeping the dog becomes a problem for the OP while waiting to hear from Battersea, may I suggest asking the vet for details of local dog rescue centres who might be able to find another foster home.

keeping the dog is not a big problem i just want whats best for him.my rant was to do with how animals are dumped so easily.whoever has this great little dog will be vetted that is why i will contact battersea for help and if no home is found he will stay with me.

Well done for taking him in and fostering him Julie. Glad he gets on with your other JRTs. You could also get onto your local (smaller) reputable rescue and let them know that he's available for homing. They'll make sure that any home is checked etc and offer rescue back up too. Having said all that you might just fall in love with him and he'll have to stay!!! :happyhear

yes we are falling in love with him georgina but on a practical note three dogs are hard work and the reason i am looking after him is he hated the kennels so took the chance of mixing him with my two.big parson is great with him but the little one has taken time to get to know him.but as i said if no good home turns up then he stays with me.yes i will try local rescue centres but only those with a reputable reputation as some rescues will rehome to anyone.

Jesus all they had to do was call the border terrier club and they could have rehomed him in a instant!! I called them when we decided to get one and they said they move VERY quickly. They are such a fantastic breed. Try them, they do have a website.

update on jasper as we called him.we took him to battersea in london on sunday due to my little jack not eating and getting depressed having another dog in the house.its one of the hardest things ive had to do but felt better once we got their and saw the place.as for the border terrier rescue society spoke to a lady in kent and she put me in touch with the club secretary but seeing as they were too far decided on battersea for their reputation.he will not be on their register for 7 days in case someone claims he is theirs but i doubt it so will ring next week to find out how its going and will let everyone know.

I'm sure that someone will correct me if I am wrong (& I hope that I am) but I have been told that Battersea will put down animals if they have not been rehomed after a set period of time? I was told this by a lady who ran a small cat home - does anybody know whether this is true or not?

I don't think they do unless the dog is impossible to rehome. A border terrier will be snapped up anyway, I searched for one for months before buying from a breeder. There are other terrier rescue centres or try the dogs trust, they never put a healthy dog down.
