Can we have a knitting thread too? I've just taken it up again but have only ventured into making scarves at the moment
I'd even forgotten how to cast off but have managed to get past that point
I could do with some simple patterns to get me going again.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

A site I like is https://www.crochetpatterncentral.com , well laid out and nice stuff on there and especially for moggins there is also knittingpatterncentral.0

Hi all
I haven't tried crochet but love knitting - just started the basics again. I learnt as a child and only started knitting recently.
I have to say the best web forum for any craft project is https://www.craftster.org
The projects are so unique, often easy and it's a very friendly community. They have forums for nearly every craft you can think of. There are also great ideas on re-making your old clothes -eg baggy t-shirts into ra-ra skirts!

Totally agree about Craftster, I've had loads of inspiration for stuff on there. You wouldn't believe the different tops you can make out of an old t-shirt!
My youngest daughter wanted to be a pumpkin for halloween so after pinching the idea from a pic I saw on a forum I am crocheting her a pumpkin poncho and I'm going to add a face from scraps of black fabric. She loves it when I make her stuff, shame her big sisters don't! For her 6th birthday last week one of her favourite presents was a crochet kit I made up from a freebie bag from a magazine, a couple of balls of wool and a hook. She picked up the chain stitch straight away and has made some hair ties and she has even had orders for them from her friends at school!0 -
Craftster is a really good board / site - wish I'd found it years ago!!
My knitting is coming on great - son already wants a jumper when I have done mine and I found a few shrug patterns to crochet!

Oh wow! This thread is really inspiring! I've been trying to learn to crochet/knit, but am finding it a struggle as I'm not good at learning stuff from books and I don't have anyone to show me. I shall give it another go.
It must be very lucrative to be good with wool at the moment. I was in a shop t'other day and they had some handmade scarves selling for £80. They were made with what looked like one ball of thick wool on big needles and whilst the wool was lovely it looked just like the stuff Rowan sell for less than a tenner.0 -
It is nice to know at least some people realise crochet is not just done by old ladies sitting in rocking chairs making blankets for their latest great grandchild. If you have lots of small bits of yarn left from making other things you could have a go at freeform crochet and save even more money. Have a look at these sites

Wow! I've been a 'closet crocheter' for a few weeks now, before getting up the courage to bring my granny square blanket into work. I'm 23 and have been struggling with the 'un-coolness' factor!
Mind you, I've just spent my lunch hour with a cross-stitch that I need to get finished before Xmas. I've now decided I don't care what people think!
I've never thought of crocheting clothes before - but I love some of the patterns on here!
I get all confused with how to work out which hook to use with what wool though - any pointers? I've got 2 hooks, a very small one and a very large one!
Tattings also good for small lacy things.....New year, no debt! Debt free date - 02/01/07 :j :j :j0 -

Like C_Q , it's years since I did any crocheting , but I think it will be the small hook for very fine work with fine wool or cotton and thick wool with the large hook.
I could only do basic stuff like blankets and scarves , but my Mum was an excellent crocheter and made some exquisite pieces. I was better at knitting but haven't done any for years either , but still have all my needles if I ever get the urge to take it up again. Still got a couple of crochet hooks too , but i've been using them to unblock the bathroom plugholes of hairs :rolleyes:Same old same old since 20080 -

Once you 'come out' you'll be amazed how many closet crafters you know. I'm 29 and admitted to my dreadful secret a few years ago and found out that 4 of my twentysomething work colleagues were cross stitchers. I have since discovered that loads of people I know love crafts. My male neighbour (who looks like a rugby player) cross stitches fairies and angels & a VERY butch lesbian friend of mine does dainty embroidery.0
